Hall of Fame
Doug Loisel was one of the premier performers in Azusa Pacific's long line of outstanding decathletes. A 6-time NAIA All-American, Loisel collected "Hall-like" credentials by wining the 1984 NAIA decathlon with meet record 7.623 points, breaking the NAIA's 15-year old standard and winning by a convincing 546 points. He fell just 2 points shy of qualifying for the 1984 U.S. Olympic Trials. As a 1983 sophomore, Loisel finished second in the NAIA decathlon with 7,225 points, and ran the third leg of APU's winning 4x400-meter relay that clocked a 3:09.77. He thus became a central figure in the Cougars capturing their first of what would be a string of 9 NAIA team championships in 10 years. As a 1995 senior, Loisel was third in the decathlon (7,040 points) and ran on the Cougars' second-place finishing 4x100-meter relay and third-place finishing 4x400-meter relay. Noted for his tireless work ethic and overachieving attitude, Loisel earned a reputation for getting the most out of his body and never giving up. He once won a 400-meter race by diving flat-out at the finish line. He is one of the select few in NAIA history to qualify for 4 NAIA championship decathlons, including as a 1981 freshman. Later that year, he won the U.S. junior decathlon title. In 1984 and 1985, he teamed with eventual U.S. champion Dave Johnson to give Azusa Pacific one of the most formidable decathlon pair in collegiate track & field history. Loisel never completed a decathlon until he came to Azusa Pacific. At Mission San Jose High School in Fremont, Calif., he was a standout sprinter and pole vaulter. In 1994, Loisel became the sixth APU alum to be inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame.
