A junior college transfer from Mt. San Jacinto, Bill McCorkle was a 2-year, 2-sport standout, a do-everything athlete who proved to be the team leader for both Cougar baseball and football. He put together a senior campaign that made him the first Cougar ever to earn All-America recognition in both football and baseball. On the gridiron he led the Cougars in tackles two years, and the Associated Press honored him on the its small college All-America team both seasons. On the diamond in the spring, he put together a senior season in which he led the Cougars in average (.433), runs, hits, doubles, home runs, and total bases to win the team's Triple Crown. He finished the 1972 season with an APU record 34-game hitting streak and a .433 batting average. Following graduation, he coached at Azusa Pacific for 3 years. He later served in the Los Angeles Police Department for ten year, primarily as a homicide detective, before moving into business.
