A two-year Cougar, Dave Johnson's track & field career culminated with a  Bronze Medal performance in the decathlon at the 1992 Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain.  Johnson was a 4-time U.S. champion in the decathlon, setting the U.S. record at 8,727, in a meet in Azusa while on his way to the 1992 Olympic Games.  He also competed in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea, finishing ninth in the decathlon.  During his 1984 and 1985 years at Azusa Pacific, he helped pace the Cougars to a pair of NAIA outdoor track & field national championships.  He was a 3-time NAIA All-American.  During his 1985 senior season he finished second in the NAIA decathlon despite no-heighting in the pole vault.  Johnson went on to win gold medals in the decathlon at the 1989 World University Games and 1986 U.S. Olympic Festival. In 1989 and 1990 he posted the world's top decathlon score.  In 1989 he was finalist for the Jesse Owens Award, given to track & field's top athlete of the year.
