Three Records Set On Saturday at Bryan Clay Invitational

Three Azusa Pacific school records were set on Saturday at the Bryan Clay.

AZUSA, Calif. -- Another day at the Bryan Clay Invitational brought more school records and automatic qualifying marks for the Azusa Pacific women's track and field team.

On Friday, Jaylah Walker broke her own own school record in the 400 hurdles with an automatic qualifying time of 59.65. One day later, Walker beat her own performance once again, finishing in a time of 58.16 in the finals on Saturday. She is the current national leader in the event. "Watching Jaylah's performance over the last four years has been really special for our coaching staff," said Azusa Pacific head coach Jack Hoyt, "Seeing her work through an injury, coaching changes, and her development into a leader on the team has been really rewarding." In addition to her individual performance, Walker also ran as the anchor for the 4x400 relay team that included Kiayra Holmes, Jordan Hammond, and Nicole Warwick, who combined for a provisional time of 3:44.51. To close the race out, Walker ran a 52 second split and nearly overcame a 40m deficit down the stretch.

Walker was not the only Cougar to break her own school record on Saturday, as Amanda Fassold cleared a height of 4.29m (14' 3/4") to beat her previous all-time mark of 14'. Fassold is the nation's leader in the pole vault, and she has already met automatic qualifying standards for Nationals.

To close out the Bryan Clay Invitational, Jenny Sandoval ran a sensational 10K to claim her second Azusa Pacific school record (she set the school record for the 5K at 16:01.41 last week), as well as rank all-time in NCAA Division II history. Sandoval finished with the fifth-fastest time in NCAA Division II history at 32:58.39, which also beat the previous Cougar program record by over a minute (33:58.91 - Lauren Jimison, 2012). Sandoval is now an auto qualifier in both the 5K and the 10K, and no other Division II runner has posted a 10K time under 34 minutes this year. "That was one of the toughest races I have ever watched," said distance coach Sean Smith, "Jenny was courageous throughout and it was an amazing run."

In addition to the record-setting performances, Azusa Pacific produced a fourth automatic qualifier on Saturday. In the high jump, Chin Agina set a new personal record at 1.77m (5' 9 ¾"), which secured her place at Outdoor Nationals. Agina is currently tied for the nation's leading mark.

The women's team now has auto qualifiers in eight events: Fassold (pole vault), Sandoval (5K & 10K), Mechaela Hyacinth (100 meters), Walker (400 hurdles), Agine (high jump), Meagan Warwick (heptathlon), 4x100 team (Meagan Warwick, Holmes, Hyacinth, Walker).

The Cougars also had a pair of athletes on the women's side improve on their provisional marks. Hyacinth ran a personal-best time of 23.76 in the 200 (previous: 23.99), while Sara Wagenveld (pole vault) cleared four meters for the first time in her career with a mark of 4.01m (13' 1 ¾"), which is tied for the 10th best vault of the season.

For the men, Jermel Jones II had a career-day in the triple jump, leaping 14.80m ("48' 6 ¾") for a provisional mark that positions him 14th nationally.
