Harris Takes Over APU Track & Field

He becomes the seventh head coach of the historic program

AZUSA, Calif. – Jebreh Harris has been appointed the Interim Head Coach of the Azusa Pacific Track & Field, as announced today by Azusa Pacific University Director of Athletics Gary Pine.

Harris, who has been a member of the Azusa Pacific coaching staff since 2024, assumes leadership of one of the nation's most successful track & field programs. His experience working with Cougar student-athletes and knowledge of the program's culture make him well-positioned to guide the team through the upcoming season.

"We are excited to name Jebreh Harris as our interim head coach," said Pine. "Jebreh has demonstrated a commitment to the values that define Azusa Pacific Athletics. His leadership, work ethic, and passion for track & field make him the right person to lead our program during this time."

Since joining the Azusa Pacific staff, Harris has played an integral role in athlete development, recruiting, and the administration of the Bryan Clay Invitational and Franson Classic, annually two of the top collegiate track & field meets. He has earned the respect of both student-athletes and colleagues through his commitment to student-athletes and attention to detail in running these two significant collegiate meets.

"It is an honor to serve as the interim head coach at Azusa Pacific," Harris said. "This program has a rich tradition of success, and I am grateful for the opportunity to lead such a historic program. I look forward to continuing to build on our culture of excellence while developing Christ-centered student-athletes prepared for a lifetime of learning and service. I thank the administration for their belief and trust in me in this transitional period of APU. To our student-athletes, Azusa Pacific University, and our alumni community I will do my part to lead with conviction and always put God First."

Until coming to Azusa Pacific in 2024, Harris had spent his entire 21-year coaching career at the NCAA Division I level, beginning first in 2003 at his alma mater Tennessee before moving on to South Carolina State for another 2 years, then 6 years at UNLV, followed by 2 years at Illinois before landing at USC where he spent 4 years.

A specialist in the 800 meters, Harris was the U.S. No. 2-ranked half-miler in 2007 and twice was a U.S. Olympic Trails finalist in the 800 meters.  He was a 2-time All-American while at Tennessee. In 2006 he ran the opening leg for a team that included Khadevis Robinson, Sam Burley, and David Krummenacker which set the U.S. record in the outdoor 4x800-meter relay with a 7:02.82, a mark that still stands as the country's best to this day.

Harris assumes the mantel of Azusa Pacific Track & Field which has established itself among the premier programs in collegiate track & field history.  Since 1983, Azusa Pacific has captured 35 national championships between its men's and women's programs at the NAIA and NCAA Division II levels. Only Arkansas and Adams State have won more track titles in that time.

Harris immediately takes over all aspects of the program, including training, competition, recruiting, and student-athlete development.
