Late-Inning Surge Sinks Cougars in Doubleheader

Azusa Pacific battles offensively but undone by big innings in both games at home.

AZUSA, Calif. - Azusa Pacific dropped both ends of a home doubleheader to No. 5 Point Loma on Saturday at the Cougar Baseball Complex, falling 11-4 in game one and 15-8 in game two.

Game 1: Point Loma 11, Azusa Pacific 4

A pivotal fourth inning proved to be the difference in the opener, as Point Loma erupted for nine runs to break open a tight contest.

After trailing just 1-0 through three innings, APU starter Kaleb Tenn ran into trouble in the fourth as the Sea Lions strung together timely hits, highlighted by a two-run homer from Mason Cook and a grand slam from Jake Schwartz.

The Cougars showed resilience late, launching three home runs, solo shots from Diego Orozco and Isaiah Rios, and a ninth-inning blast from Aeden Alexander, but couldn't overcome the early deficit.

Noah Lane led APU with three hits, while Edwin Segovia provided stability out of the bullpen with four scoreless innings of relief.

Game 2: Point Loma 15, Azusa Pacific 8

The nightcap turned into an offensive battle, with Azusa Pacific briefly taking control before another explosive inning by Point Loma shifted the momentum for good.

After falling behind 3-0 early, the Cougars responded with an eight-run stretch across the second through sixth innings, taking an 8-5 lead behind key contributions from Caleb Velo (three RBIs) and Jacob Freer (two RBIs).

However, the Sea Lions answered emphatically in the seventh, plating 10 runs on 11 hits to reclaim control. The rally included a bases-clearing triple from Ryan Ruch and a two-run homer from Owen May.

APU finished with 10 hits, including multi-hit performances from Freer, Lane, and Velo, but were unable to respond after the decisive inning.
