Biography

2025: Herges demonstrated significant resilience in his redshirt-junior campaign, returning to the mound after a recurring shoulder injury sidelined much of his previous two seasons. He made 10 appearances, including one start, logging 11.0 innings of work and striking out five batters. He proved to be a reliable option in high-leverage relief, often stabilizing the middle innings for the Cougar pitching staff. Following the collegiate season, he returned to the Arroyo Seco Saints of the California Collegiate League, where he was electric, posting a 2-1 record with a 4.50 ERA and striking out 28 batters in just 22.0 innings. His season was highlighted by several high-impact performances:

  • February 6 vs. Cal State Monterey Bay: Tossed a clean, scoreless ninth inning to secure a series-opening victory and showcase his return to full health.

  • February 14 vs. Westmont: Entered in a high-leverage situation to earn the save, shutting down a late Warrior rally to preserve a narrow win.

  • July 26 (Arroyo Seco Saints): Delivered a masterful performance in summer ball, pitching four innings with six strikeouts while allowing only three runs in a relief effort against the Riptide.

2024: Played in just 6 games as a redshirt-sophomore, making sporadic appearances on the mound before being shut down with the same shoulder injury that sidelined his 2023 campaign. He was 0-1 in 8 innings of work, making three appearances in February, two in March, and just one in April.

2023: Started his college career in fine fashion, working his first 19.2 innings in the opening month of the season and allowing just six earned runs (3.20 ERA) with 19 strikeouts and only three walks. However, a unique muscle injury in his shoulder curtailed his progress, limiting him to just nine more appearances and 24 innings of work. He finished the campaign with an 0-3 record and a 5.77 ERA.

Prior to APU During his high school and collegiate career, Herges has established himself as a high-strikeout right-hander with a professional approach to the game:

Prior to APU

  • High School Honors: A 2021 All-Region First Team selection at Notre Dame Prep. As a senior, he posted a 6-1 record with a 1.79 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 27.1 innings, leading his team to the AIA 4A State Championship tournament.

  • Legacy: Son of Matt Herges, a 13-year MLB veteran pitcher (Dodgers, Giants, Padres, and others) who currently serves as a coach in professional baseball.

Personal Born on December 9, 2002, Tyler is the son of Matt and Jane Herges. He has a younger sister, Julia, and a younger brother, Bryce. He is majoring in Business Management and chose APU for its strong community and the opportunity to compete at the NCAA level.

Fun Fact: His father, Matt, pitched in over 560 Major League games, providing Tyler with a unique perspective on the mental side of the pitching craft.
