WAIPAHU, HI– The Cougars showed up and delivered a dominant performance in their first game to open their Hawaii Series against Chaminade, cruising to a 16-3 victory at Hans L'Orange Field on Saturday, February 28th.
How it Happened:
Azusa Pacific got on the board early, plating three runs in the second inning. A solo homer by Jacob Hayes ignited the rally, followed by an RBI triple from Matt Kurkdijan and an RBI single from Blake Hagerty to give the Cougars an early lead against the Silverswords. In the third, Caleb Velo doubled to push the lead to 5-0, and APU continued to drive in runs.
By the fifth inning, APU's lineup was in full motion. Velo continued his big day with a two-RBI single, driving in Robinette, Jacob Hayes, and Noah Lane to make it 7–0. A sacrifice fly from Jacob Freer later in the inning added another run and highlighted APU's ability to convert with runners in scoring position.
The sixth inning was where the rout truly blew open. Noah Lane launched a solo home run to left, his second extra-base hit of the game, igniting a five-run frame that included a bases-loaded walk for Tyler Preece and a run-scoring walk for Diego Orozco. That outburst put the Cougars up 12–0 and left Chaminade's bullpen under heavy fire.
APU wasn't done yet. In the seventh, Matt Kurkdjian clubbed a three-run home run, his second extra-base hit of the day, driving in Velo and Hayes and making it 15–2. An RBI single from Blake Hagerty capped the inning's scoring, underscoring Azusa Pacific's relentless offense.
Chaminade's offense struggled against a solid Cougars pitching effort. The 'Swords managed to score in the sixth and seventh innings, including a two-run double by Caleb Kim and an RBI groundout by Alex Hamada, but it wasn't enough to close the gap.
On the Mound: APU starter Casey Spencer (1-1) earned the win, limiting Chaminade to just three runs over 5 1/3 innings while the bullpen kept the pressure on the 'Swords.
Up Next: The Cougars will continue their series against Chaminade on Sunday, March 1st. First pitch is scheduled for 11 AM HST (2 PM PST).
