LA MIRADA, Calif. — Azusa Pacific secured the Cornerstone Cup series over Biola on Saturday, splitting the road doubleheader with a tough 7–6 extra-inning loss in game one before responding with a 19–16 offensive explosion in game two to claim the series 3–1.
The Cougars showcased resilience and offensive firepower throughout the day, bouncing back from a narrow defeat to secure the rivalry series win.
Game One – Biola 7, Azusa Pacific 6 (10 innings)
The opener was a tightly contested battle that extended into extra innings, with Biola ultimately walking it off in the 10th.
Azusa Pacific struck first in the opening inning when Jacob Freer doubled and later scored on an RBI groundout from Isaiah Rios to take a 1–0 lead.
After falling behind 2–1, the Cougars responded in the fifth inning. Freer singled to spark the rally before Tyler Preece delivered a two-run double to give APU a 3–2 lead. Jacob Hayes added a sacrifice fly later in the inning to extend the advantage to 4–2.
Biola answered in the bottom half, and the back-and-forth continued late into the game.
APU tied the game in the ninth with a run to force extras, but the Eagles delivered the final blow in the 10th, using timely hitting to secure a 7–6 win.
Freer led the Cougars with a 4-for-5 performance and three runs scored, while Preece drove in three runs in the loss.
Game Two – Azusa Pacific 19, Biola 16
The nightcap turned into one of the wildest offensive games of the season, and the Cougars delivered the final answer.
Azusa Pacific exploded out of the gate with an eight-run first inning, highlighted by a three-run double from Noah Lane and a three-run home run from Bryce Robinette to take immediate control.
The Cougars continued to apply pressure, adding three runs in the second and another in the third to build an early 12–4 advantage.
Biola refused to go away, responding with a six-run second inning and continuing to chip away until eventually taking a 13–12 lead in the third.
From there, the game turned into a back-and-forth slugfest.
Jacob Freer delivered a key RBI double in the fourth to tie the game, and the Cougars continued to capitalize on scoring opportunities in the middle innings. Noah Lane, Tyler Preece and Freer each delivered multi-hit performances as APU piled up 20 hits in the contest.
The Cougars regained control late, scoring in four different innings down the stretch to pull ahead for good.
Joey Frey earned the win in relief, and Andrew Miller closed out the final inning to secure the 19–16 victory and seal the series.
