Azusa Pacific Drops Saturday Doubleheader at Hawai‘i Pacific

Cougars fall in both games at Hans L’Orange Park as O‘ahu road trip concludes.

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i — Azusa Pacific wrapped up its O'ahu road trip with a pair of losses to Hawai'i Pacific on Saturday at Hans L'Orange Park, falling 8–1 in the afternoon opener and 10–2 in the nightcap.

Despite moments of opportunity throughout the day, the Cougars were unable to overcome early deficits in both contests as Hawai'i Pacific used timely hitting and strong pitching to secure the doubleheader sweep.

Game One – Hawai'i Pacific 8, Azusa Pacific 1

The Sharks took control early in the first game, capitalizing on defensive miscues to jump out to a four-run lead in the opening inning.

After a pair of singles put runners on base, a fielding error allowed the first run to score before Owen Wessel delivered a two-run single to center that extended the lead to 4–0. Hawai'i Pacific added another run in the second inning on a solo home run from Noah Hata to push the advantage to five.

Azusa Pacific managed to get on the board in the fifth inning. Jacob Hayes singled and later moved into scoring position before Steven Lukasiewicz lined a single to left field. Moments later, Jacob Freer lifted a sacrifice fly to left to bring Hayes home and cut the deficit to 5–1.

The Sharks responded in the bottom half of the inning, manufacturing two runs with aggressive baserunning and wild pitches before adding another run in the sixth to extend the lead to 8–1.

APU finished the game with four hits, including singles from Blake Hagerty, Noah Lane, Hayes and Lukasiewicz. Joel Tornero took the loss after allowing six runs across 4.1 innings, while Jacob Yun worked the final 1.2 innings in relief.

Game Two – Hawai'i Pacific 10, Azusa Pacific 2

The nightcap followed a similar script as Hawai'i Pacific's offense struck early and never relinquished control.

The Sharks opened the scoring in the first inning when Noah Hata tripled to center field and came home on Tyler Arnold's RBI double. Christian Perez followed with an RBI single to make it 2–0.

Hawai'i Pacific added two more in the second inning and then broke the game open in the third. Consecutive RBI hits from Taydem Hashimoto and Arnold highlighted a four-run inning that stretched the lead to 8–0.

Azusa Pacific broke through in the sixth inning after Tyler Preece was hit by a pitch and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Bryce Robinette. The Cougars added another run in the seventh when Steven Lukasiewicz tripled to center field and later scored on a passed ball to make it 10–2.

David O'Neill took the loss after allowing seven runs in 2.2 innings. Edwin Segovia followed with three innings of relief, and Aiden Franco finished the game on the mound for the Cougars.

Hawai'i Pacific tallied 14 hits in the nightcap, including four from Arnold, while Hata and Taguchi each recorded multiple hits.

Azusa Pacific closes its Hawai'i trip and will now return to the mainland to continue PacWest play in the coming week.
