HONOLULU, Hawaii — Azusa Pacific closed out its PacWest series at Les Murakami Stadium with a doubleheader split on Monday, falling 4–3 in game one before responding with an 8–6 victory in game two to secure three of four against Chaminade.
Game One – Chaminade 4, Azusa Pacific 3
The opener was a tightly contested, back-and-forth battle that ultimately came down to the final inning.
After four scoreless frames, Azusa Pacific broke through in the fifth. Danny O'Neill reached on a bunt single and advanced into scoring position before Blake Hagerty delivered a sacrifice fly to give the Cougars a 1–0 lead.
Chaminade answered immediately in the bottom half. A walk and sacrifice bunt set the table before three consecutive run scoring plays, including RBI singles from Bode Poler and Cameron Breeze and a sacrifice fly from Alex Greb, flipped the score to 3–1.
APU stayed within striking distance and mounted a late rally in the seventh. Steven Lukasiewicz singled to spark the inning, Tyler Preece followed with a base hit, and Noah Lane drove in a run with a single to left. Moments later, Jacob Hayes lined a single to right to tie the game at 3–3.
However, the Silverswords had the final response.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Chaminade strung together consecutive singles before Evon Williams delivered the walk off RBI single to right center, handing Azusa Pacific a 4–3 loss.
The Cougars racked up 10 hits and received multi hit performances from Preece, Lane and Bryce Robinette, but left nine runners on base in the narrow defeat.
Game Two – Azusa Pacific 8, Chaminade 6
The nightcap saw momentum swing early, but this time the Cougars controlled the decisive innings.
Azusa Pacific struck first in the opening frame. Bryce Robinette reached and scored on a Blake Hagerty RBI double, and Noah Lane added a run scoring groundout to make it 2–0.
Chaminade countered with three runs in the first and added three more in the third to build a 6–2 advantage, capitalizing on timely extra base hits and aggressive base running.
The Cougars' answer came in the fourth, and it was emphatic.
After Tyler Preece was hit by a pitch and Noah Lane singled, Jacob Hayes ripped a two run double down the left field line to cut the deficit to two. Steven Lukasiewicz followed with a two run ground rule double to tie the game, and a wild pitch allowed the go ahead run to score, capping a five run inning that turned a four run deficit into a 7–6 APU lead.
Tyler Preece added an insurance run in the sixth with an RBI single after Hagerty singled and stole second.
From there, the bullpen shut the door.
Matthew Brock earned the win in relief, tossing 1.2 steady innings, and Andrew Miller dominated over the final three frames, striking out five and allowing just one hit to record the save.
Azusa Pacific finished with eight hits in the victory, including two from Hagerty and Hayes, and showcased resilience once again after trailing early.
With the split, the Cougars improve to 6–5 in PacWest play and leave a chaotic weekend having taken three of four from Chaminade.
APU will remain on O'ahu and travel back to Waipahu for a four game series against Hawai'i Pacific beginning Thursday at Hans L'Orange Park.
