Azusa Pacific Falls to Utah Tech in Game Two

Cougars tie game early but cannot contain Trailblazers’ offensive surge in 12–2 loss.

ST. GEORGE, Utah — Azusa Pacific was unable to carry over its game one momentum, falling 12–2 to Division I Utah Tech in game two of the series Saturday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field.

The Cougars (23–22) battled early, evening the score after an initial deficit, but Utah Tech used a series of multi-run innings to pull away and secure the win.

Utah Tech struck first in the opening inning, capitalizing on a bases-loaded opportunity to take a 2–0 lead on a two-RBI single.

Azusa Pacific responded in the second inning. Isaiah Rios drew a walk and Noah Lane followed with a single to set the table before Caleb Velo delivered an RBI single. Moments later, Jacob Freer lined a base hit to left-center to bring in another run, tying the game at 2–2.

The momentum quickly shifted.

Utah Tech answered with a three-run second inning, using a combination of singles and situational hitting to reclaim a 5–2 advantage. The Trailblazers continued to build in the fourth, highlighted by a three-run home run from Ty Johnsen that extended the lead to 9–2.

From there, Utah Tech maintained control, adding three more runs across the sixth inning to push the margin to 12–2.

Azusa Pacific managed six hits on the afternoon, with Freer, Bryce Robinette, Tyler Preece, Jacob Hayes, Noah Lane and Velo each recording a hit. Velo and Freer accounted for the Cougars' two RBIs.

On the mound, Casey Spencer took the loss after allowing five runs over 2.2 innings. Joey Frey provided relief, while Blake Hagerty closed out the final inning for APU.

Despite the early fight, the Cougars were unable to slow Utah Tech's offensive rhythm, as the Trailblazers finished with 13 hits and capitalized on key opportunities throughout the game.

Azusa Pacific will look to bounce back as the series continues against Utah Tech on Sunday.
