MONMOUTH, Ore. -- Azusa Pacific got a good look at its future in a 41-16 win at Western Oregon, as redshirt freshman QB Tyrone Williams Jr. threw four first-half touchdown passes to different receivers and all of the Cougars' scoring was produced by players from the freshman, sophomore, or junior class.
Williams stepped into the starting role for one game to fill in for senior QB Andrew Elffers, who was not available for the game due to an undisclosed injury. His start was nearly perfect, as he completed 19-of-29 passes for 325 yards and 4 touchdowns. In the first half alone, he was 14-of-16 for 261 yards, including a run of 13 consecutive completions heading into halftime.
Defensively, the Cougars adjusted after giving up two touchdowns and 152 yards of total offense in the opening quarter, holding the Wolves under 100 yards combined over the second and third quarters while building a 41-16 lead.
With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 6-4 overall and concludes Great Northwest Athletic Conference play with a 4-4 record. The Cougars conclude the regular season at home in non-conference action against No. 15-ranked Colorado Mesa University.
How It Happened: Azusa Pacific answered both of Western Oregon's first-quarter scores with touchdowns, and Williams kept the pressure on with a total of four first-half touchdown passes to give the Cougars a 28-13 halftime edge. The defense held the Wolves to just a field goal the rest of the way, and Kurt Scoby scored consecutive rushing touchdowns in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter to put the game away.
Turning Point: After a Williams fumble gave Western Oregon the ball at the Azusa Pacific 28-yard line with a chance to take the lead, Azusa Pacific's defense rose to the occasion. Haden Hobbs pulled the ballcarrier down for a four-yard loss on first down, and after a 12-yard gain set up third-and-short, the Cougars forced back-to-back incompletions to give the ball right back to Williams and the offense. The redshirt freshman quarterback found his groove at that moment, completing 5-of-5 passes on the drive, including a 30-yard scoring strike to Jordan Bogardus to extend Azusa Pacific's lead to 21-13.
Azusa Pacific Standouts: Aaron Berry blocked two kicks and collected a team-high six tackles, which included 2.5 tackles for loss. The Cougars' secondary registered 12 pass breakups, led by true freshman cornerback Josh Olave with 3, to hold Western Oregon starting QB Nick Duckworth to a 43 percent (20-for-47) completion percentage.
Along with Williams' 325-yard, 4-touchdown passing performance, Scoby produced 103 rushing yards with two scores on 20 carries. Williams connected with seven different receivers, with Weston Carr leading the Cougars with five receptions for 74 yards. Bogardus also had five catches totaling 63 yards, and Darrell Adams Jr. had three catches for 72 yards including a 58-yard first-quarter touchdown catch that opened the Azusa Pacific scoring.
Western Oregon Standouts: Devon Fortier rushed 18 times for 97 yards and a touchdown to lead the WOU offense, and he added 20 yards receiving on three catches. However, the Cougars limited Paul Revis, the Division II national leader in receptions, to five catches for 56 yards on the day.
Defensively, the Wolves were led by Bo Highburger, who registered a game-high 15 tackles and recovered a fumble. Curtis Anderson produced another turnover with a fourth-quarter interception deep in WOU territory.
What's Next: On Saturday, Nov. 11, Azusa Pacific wraps up the 2017 campaign by hosting No. 15-ranked Colorado Mesa, which clinched at least a share of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference for the third consecutive season with a 69-7 win at South Dakota School of Mines & Technology on Saturday.
