GLENDORA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific dominated its Homecoming game from wire-to-wire while continuing to rewrite program history with a 61-0 win over Simon Fraser Saturday night at Citrus Stadium.
The shutout was the Cougars' first home shutout in a GNAC game since joining the league in 2012, and it was among the most dominant defensive efforts seen under 12th-year head coach Victor Santa Cruz. Azusa Pacific limited the Clan to minus-54 yards rushing, thanks in part to a season-high 8 sacks, as the Cougars held Simon Fraser to 122 yards of total offense.
Meanwhile, Azusa Pacific's offense continued its torrid scoring pace, becoming the first team in program history to score 60 points in a game twice in the same season. Andrew Elffers threw for four touchdowns and scored another himself as the senior quarterback completed 15-of-23 passes for 247 yards while rushing 8 times for 92 yards. Weston Carr caught 10 passes for 178 yards and 2 touchdowns, his fourth consecutive game with at least 160 receiving yards.
How It Happened: Elffers was perfect into the second quarter, completing his first seven passes for 129 yards to guide the Cougars to quick scores on the offense's first three possessions of the game. Elffers scored the game's opening touchdown from 11 yards out before hitting Carr for touchdowns of 31 and 16 yards. All three scoring drives took 1:33 or less, and Azusa Pacific led by a 23-0 margin after the opening quarter.
Simon Fraser's best chance to score came on its first possession of the second quarter, driving to the Cougars' 2-yard line before Josh Olave picked off Miles Richardson in the end zone. The Clan only got across midfield one more time in the game, but that drive stalled at Azusa Pacific's 33-yard line when SFU turned the ball over on downs.
Turning Point: Jason Schwartz followed up Azusa Pacific's opening touchdown with a third-down sack that forced Simon Fraser to punt from its own 10-yard line, and it took Elffers and Carr only six seconds to connect on a 31-yard touchdown that doubled the lead to 14-0. Schwartz had a career-high three sacks, all in the first half, to lead the Cougars to a season-high total of eight sacks.
Making History:
-Elffers' 247 yards passing pushed him past 2,000 passing yards on the season, joining Luke Winslow as the only quarterbacks in program history to throw for 2,000 yards in consecutive seasons.
-Azusa Pacific has posted shutouts in four of the past five seasons
-The eight sacks recorded by the Cougar defense was its highest since tallying nine sacks last year against Simon Fraser (Sept. 24, 2016)
-The 122 yards of total offense allowed by Azusa Pacific was the second-lowest single-game total under Santa Cruz. The Cougars only allowed 117 yards to Simon Fraser last year in the second meeting between the teams (Oct. 22, 2016)
More History: In addition to becoming the first team in program history with 60-point games twice in the same season, Azusa Pacific's scoring over the last five games continues a record scoring pace for the program. Starting with a school and conference single-game scoring record in an 83-7 road win over Simon Fraser to start the recent run, Azusa Pacific has followed that record-shattering effort with 48 points (vs. Western Oregon), 35 points (vs. Colorado School of Mines), 49 points (vs. Humboldt State), along with this week's 61-point explosion. That gives the Cougars 276 points (55.2 per game) over the last five games, which is the most productive five-game stretch in program history. The current run includes the highest single-game, two-game, three-game, four-game, and five-game scoring totals in program history.
Azusa Pacific Standouts: Elffers finished 15-of-23 passing for 247 yards to go with 8 carries for 92 rushing yards, and he accounted for 5 touchdowns (4 passing, 1 rushing). Carr caught 10 passes for 178 yards and 2 touchdowns, and Jordan Bogardus also had 2 touchdowns in 3 catches for 36 yards. Kurt Scoby, Ray Riley, and Preston Campbell each added a rushing touchdown for the Cougars.
Schwartz had 3 sacks in the first half alone to lead the defense, which registered a total of 16 tackles for loss.
Simon Fraser Standouts: Only one player (Dionte Simon) finished with net positive rushing yardage (3 yards) for the Clan, although Miles Richardson completed 22-of-36 passes for 176 yards. Justin Buren was his top target, catching 10 passes for 89 yards. Gabe Lopes led SFU's defense with a game-high 9 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss.
What's Next: Azusa Pacific visits No. 9-ranked Central Washington for a national ESPN3 broadcast on Oct. 28, and the Cougars are on the road again to face Western Oregon on Nov. 4 before closing out the regular season at home against No. 16-ranked Colorado Mesa on Nov. 11.
