Zea Leads the Comeback Way

SAN DIEGO, Calif. –- Senior Scott Zea scored 20 of his career-high 24 points in the second half, including 5 straight in snapping a 75-all tie, to lead the NAIA's No. 3-ranked Azusa Pacific to a 100-90 victory over Point Loma Nazarene.

Zea drained 8-of-12 shots, including his only 3-point attempt of the second half that gave Azusa Pacific a lead 78-75 lead with just under 8 minutes to play. It was all part of an 18-7 game-clinching run in which Zea scored the Cougars' first 7 points and capped the breakout with a resounding dunk that iced the game at 93-82 with 1:20 remaining.

"Scott played an amazing second half," said Cougar coach Bill Odell. "In the first half he was a little bit out of it, but in the second half he played like a man. To be honest, I couldn't believe he could play like that."

Center Brice Prather added 19 points while junior forward Tristan King collected 18.

Azusa Pacific had to rally from its largest halftime deficit of the season, using a 14-2 run over the first 5 minutes of the second half to erase a 53-46 Point Loma Nazarene lead and assume a 60-55 advantage. Zea and Prather burned the Point Loma's postmen by scoring 12 of the Cougars' 14 points in the run.

Point Loma had surprised the Cougars with a blistering shooting pace, making 14 of its final 19 shots of the first half to move out to a double-digit lead at 44-34 before settling for a rather comfortable 7-point advantage at the break. All-GSAC guard Matt Benson paced the Sea Lions by tallying 15 of his eventual 21 points in the first half. PLNU torched the Cougar defense for a season-high 53 points in one half.

"They were out-working us and being the aggressor in the first half," said Odell, "but we just competed harder in the second half. We worked hard to get to the boards and didn't back off as we did in the first half."

Azusa Pacific, which generally has been a good defensive team all season, tightened the screws in the second half, holding the Sea Lions to just 38-percent shooting over the final 20 minutes, thanks in part to a 1-for-8 clip out of the second half gate.

"It was a special half," said Odell. "We were as much a team as we've been all season. We were picking each other up, encouraging, working together."

For the second straight game, the Cougars dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Sea Lions by 22 caroms, 43-23. Zea and junior guard Khalif Ford, who scored 10 points, were both just a rebound away from a double-double, each finishing with a game-high 9. Senior guard Demario Butler, whose availability was a game-time decision due to a sprained ankle, nonetheless registered 13 points, 5 rebounds and a game-high 5 assists.

Azusa Pacific, which entered the game fourth in the nation in scoring (90.3 avg.), reaches the century mark for the third time this season and the first time in GSAC play since downing Hope International, 100-62, last February 7. Addtionally, the 190 points scored tonight are the most in a GSAC game since Westmont and San Diego Christian combined for 211 on Jan. 8, 2005.

The victory is Azusa Pacific's 11th straight, and tenth in a row by 10 or more points. The Cougars improve to 15-1 on the season and strengthen their lead in the GSAC at 5-1. Point Loma Nazarene falls to 10-6 overall, 2-4 in the GSAC.
