Cougars Win 2 To Open GSAC Play

RIVERSIDE, CALIF. – The start of conference play didn't seem to change the course of Azusa Pacific softball. The juggernaut Cougars swept a pair of GSAC games at Cal Baptist, knocking off the Lancers, 10-3 and 6-0.

Azusa Pacific, which has now won 19 of its past 20 games, used the same prescription it has used all season to down the Lancers – good pitching and power hitting.

Cougar bats accounted for 21 hits and 16 runs on the day while the arms of pitchers Jodi Miller and Mandy Dorow limited Cal Baptist to just 8 hits and no earned runs.

In the first game, Azusa Pacific scored 4 third-inning runs by way of 4 singles. Freshman Sasha Budde rapped a 2-run single to score Cristal Brown and Jaime Salazar to put the Cougars up 3-0.

Brown then launched her first home run of the season, a solo shot in the fourth inning, to push the Cougar lead to 5-0. Azusa Pacific blew open the game with 3 runs in the top of the fifth. Lorna Lyttle and Laura Powers had back-to-back doubles to push across 2 runs.

The Lancers got on the scoreboard with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Lyttle, who was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, capped off the game with her eighth home run of the season, tying Jennifer McNatt's single season record originally set in 1997.

In the second game, Dorow put together her best effort of the season, holding the Lancers to just 2 singles while the Cougars cruised to the win. Dorow struck out just 1 batter but did not walk anyone. At one point, she retired 16 straight Lancers.

Powers and freshman Jennie Waleszonia lined second-inning doubles to get the Cougars going, 3-0. It was all Dorow needed. Waleszonia finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI.

With the sweep, which is the first by any GSAC school in conference play this season, Azusa Pacific improves to 21-6 overall, 2-0 in GSAC.
