MARYSVILLE, Calif. — Azusa Pacific was swept by Jessup in Tuesday's doubleheader, falling 8–5 in the opener before dropping the finale 7–4. The Warriors used a four-run third inning to take control of game one and a four-run sixth in game two, while Julia Doan homered and drove in two and Alexus Corona added a pair of RBI to lead the Cougars.
Game One: Azusa Pacific 5, Jessup 8
Jessup struck first with two runs in the opening inning, then added four more in the third to take control of the game at 6–0.
Azusa Pacific broke through in the fourth. Burns led off with a triple, and Alexus Corona hit a sacrifice fly to put the Cougars on the board.
Jessup answered with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, stretching the lead to 8–1.
The Cougars mounted their biggest push in the sixth. Julia Doan and Burns opened the inning with back-to-back singles before both advancing a base on a passed ball. Hannah Tipton doubled to right field to send Doan home and put Burns on third. Corona then singled up the middle to cut the deficit to 8–3, and Tipton came home off a sac bunt from Celeste Camarena. Juarez added a two-out RBI single to bring home Corona as Azusa Pacific pulled within 8–5.
Burns led the offense, going 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored, while Corona finished with two RBI. Fraser also tripled, and Juarez collected two hits with an RBI. Tipton added a double and an RBI as the Cougars totaled nine hits.
In the circle, Ava Hernandez started and took the loss after allowing six runs over three innings. Charli Ray Escobedo worked the final three innings in relief, allowing two runs while striking out two.
Azusa Pacific chipped away late, but Jessup's six-run cushion through three innings proved too much to overcome.
Game Two: Azusa Pacific 4, Jessup 7
Azusa Pacific struck first in the second inning. After drawing walks to put runners on, Julia Doan delivered the big swing with a two-run home run to give the Cougars an early 2–0 lead.
The Cougars held that advantage behind a strong start from Allie Reese, who worked through the first three innings without allowing a run.
Jessup broke through in the fourth, scoring two runs to even the game at 2–2, then added another run in the fifth to take a 3–2 lead.
The Warriors continued to pull away in the sixth, stringing together hits and capitalizing on opportunities to plate four runs and stretch the lead to 7–2.
Azusa Pacific put together a last-ditch effort in the seventh, scoring 2 runs off of an error from the Warriors, but could not string together a comeback.
Doan led the offense, going 1-for-2 with a home run and two RBI, while Celeste Camarena added a double and reached base three times. Reagan Kunkle also recorded a hit, and Burns reached twice as part of the Cougars' 10-walk effort.
In the circle, Reese tossed 3.2 innings, allowing two runs, while Maddy Debs and Charli Ray Escobedo combined in relief.
