Biography

THIS YEAR: Laura Powers brings an element of consistency as one of the top returning hitters in the Cougar lineup ... Will work on hitting for power to complement Lorna Lyttle and be used primarily as a designated player … May see some action at third base as well.

2000: Despite her first season batting under .300 (.285), Powers remained an asset in conference play, appearing in all 24 GSAC games to hit .357 (25-for-70) ... Tallied 13 extra-base hits, including a team-high 11 doubles ... Hit safely in 15 games of a 17-game stretch ... Had 10 multiple-hit games ... Was 2-for-4 with a home run and 3 RBIs in a 9-2 victory over Cal Baptist ... Went 4-for-6 with 2 doubles, 3 RBIs and a run in a 10-2, 6-0 sweep of Cal Baptist in Riverside.

1999: Finished second on the team with a .342 batting average, but took her hitting to a new level in conference games, batting .431 (25-for-58) in 20 GSAC contests ... Hit safely in 18 of the final 22 games ... Had 13 multiple-hit games, including 5 straight in the midst of an 8-game hitting streak ... Had identical 2-for-4 performances in a sweep over La Verne, notching a home run and 3 RBIs in each game ... Went 3-for-4 with a home run in a 7-3 GSAC victory over Cal Baptist.

1998: Batted .306 in 30 games as a 1998 freshman ... Had 7 multiple-hit games, including a 2-for-4 performance with 3 RBIs in the Cougars' 11-8 win over Puget Sound.

VOLLEYBALL: Played volleyball at Azusa Pacific in the fall of 1998, appeared in 21 of the Cougars' 23 matches, primarily as a defensive specialist.

HIGH SCHOOL: Prepped at Cypress (Calif.) High from which she graduated in 1997 ... Played 4 years of varsity softball and 3 years of varsity volleyball for the Centurions ... Was a 3-time All-Empire League second team pick.

PERSONAL: Born July 24, 1979, in Long Beach, Calif., to Avery and Jean Powers ... Enjoys camping ... Served 3 years on her high school's ASB ... Majoring in social science
