AZUSA, CALIF. – It took 6 tries, but the NAIA's No. 14-ranked Biola finally found a way to beat No. 7 Azusa Pacific. The Eagles, led by Marcus White's game-high 22 points and Andrew Carlson's 7 blocked shots, snapped a 5-game losing streak to the Cougars with a 70-57 GSAC win Thursday night in La Mirada.
The Cougars, who never led, were just a point behind at 23-22 with 5:23 to play in the first half when Damian Raibon scored 2 of his 8 points. However, Biola went on a 12-6 run for the remainder of the half to take a 35-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.
After Biola took a 9-point lead at 46-37 with 15:06 to play, the Cougar defense held the Eagles scoreless for nearly 3 minutes. But the Cougars could only cut the lead to 46-41, on a Kevin Daley 3-pointer and a Gary Dredge free throw, before Carlson sank a free throw with 12:10 remaining. The Cougars missed 2 field goal attempts and 3 free throws during the 2:56 stretch.
Following Daley's pair of free throws that cut the Biola lead to 56-47 with 8:10 to play, the Cougars could not come closer than 9 points, and the Eagles ran out the clock for just their second win over Azusa Pacific in the past 15 meetings between the GSAC rivals.
he Cougars could not overcome a cold 22% (5-for-23) shooting in the second half, as their field goal percentage over the past 2 games dropped to a dismal 36% (49-for-135). The 57 points is the lowest output for a Cougar team in a GSAC game since an 80-57 loss at Westmont in 1991. It was also the lowest Cougar point total this decade.
Jerome Joseph scored a team-high 20 points, while Daley added 14 points and 6 rebounds.
Azusa Pacific falls to 1-1 in the GSAC, 11-3 overall, while Biola remains undefeated in conference play at 2-0 with an 11-2 overall record.
