Tale of Two Games

Azusa Pacific Splits Doubleheader with CUI.

AZUSA, Calif. - The Cougars closed their final two games against Concordia Saturday evening at the Cougar Baseball Complex. Azusa Pacific claimed a 7-2 win in Game 3, while Concordia answered with a 13-0 win in Game 4.

Game 3: Cougars Hold off Golden Eagles, 7-2.

Concordia opened the first inning with a double and then an RBI single to put the Eagles up one run on the Cougars.
It seems like the third inning is the sweet spot for the Cougars, as they rallied to answer Concordia's lone point. The rally started with singles by Jacob Freer, Allan Camarillo, Mikey Easter, Jacob Hayes, and Dominic Martinez to bring the Cougars up by two runs. With two runners on base, Elijah Cook blasted a 3-RBI home run, extending the Cougars' lead to 6-1.

Concordia managed to score an unearned run in the top of the seventh, to which the Cougars responded promptly. Elijah Cook doubled, and Diego Frey followed with a single, bringing in another run to maintain the lead.

Gavino Rosales (3-3) earned the win this afternoon, pitching six solid innings with two strikeouts. Reliever Jake Vargas replaced him in the seventh inning, with Joey Frey and Joel Tornero closing out the game as the Cougars sealed the win in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.

Game 4: Concordia Erupts Late to Shut Cougars Out, 0-13.

In the final game of the series, the Eagles answered, using a six-run fifth inning to claim the series win.
While the Cougars had notable hits, such as Mikey Easter and Danny Yanez's doubles, and Danny O'Neil's first career hit, the bats could not get past the Concordia defense.

Concordia broke through in the fifth inning, already leading 5-0 against the Cougars. A handful of doubles and singles allowed Concordia to continue to extend their lead to 11-0 by the end of the fifth inning. Another set of singles and a double in the sixth shut the door on the Cougars.

Up Next: The Cougars will face the Menlo Oaks, a new contender in the PacWest Conference, in a doubleheader on Friday and Saturday, April 4th and 5th. This will mark the first meeting between the two teams since 2012, with their rivalry dating back to 1996 when both were part of the NAIA. In their nine previous matchups, Azusa Pacific has won eight of them.
