Sweep Slips South

Cal State San Bernardino scored twice in its final at-bat to sink APU's push for DH sweep.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- Tyler Vanneste's 1-out, 2-run home run in the bottom of the eighth allowed Cal State San Bernardino to rally for a 13-12 victory over Azusa Pacific in the nightcap of a twinbill in which the Cougars took the first game, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Fiscalini Field Saturday afternoon.

The Cougars were in position to sweep the doubleheader, rallying from an 8-3 deficit through 5 innings to take a 12-11 lead in the top of the eighth when Josh Chavez' 2-out single to center plated Danny Yanez and Mikey Easter. The Cougars had tattered the Coyote bullpen for 9 runs on 7 hits from the sixth through the eighth innings.  However, Cal State, which had touched the Cougar bullpen as well, took the lead right back in the bottom of the eighth on Vanneste's blast off freshman Adrian Hernandez.  It was Vanneste who sparked the Coyotes to the win over APU last night with a pair of 2-run doubles that led to a Coyote 12-4 win.

The Cougar offense exploded in the second game for 13 hits.  Second baseman Dom Martinez was 3-for-6 with 2 RBIs and a pair of runs scored.  And youth served the Cougars well with freshmen Jacob Hayes, Jacob Freer and Antonio Lujan going for a combined 5-for-10 with 4 RBIs, and 4 runs scored.  Yet, it wasn't enough as the Cougar pitching staff surrendered 12 or more runs for the second time in 3 outings in this young season.

In the first game, however, senior Gavino Rosales made his pitches dance for 5 innings, holding the Coyotes' power bats at bay, and relievers Casey Spencer and Joel Torero scattered 2 hits over the final 4 innings to secure Azusa Pacific's first win of the season.  Gavino faced 19 Coyotes, and didn't strike out any while walking 3 of them.  Yet, he got big outs when needed and surrendered just 1 run when Vanneste double down the right field line to score Adrian Hinojosa to tie the game at 1-1 with 1 out in the fifth inning.

However, the Cougars answered in their half of the sixth inning when Elijah Cook, who had 2 hits in the game, singled to centerfield to score Martinez to put APU back on top and put Rosales in position for the win.  Azusa Pacific took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Hayes crushed a home run to left field for his first collegiate hit.  Spencer, a transfer from San Jose State, and Tornero, a transfer from UC San Diego, allowed just 2 Coyotes to reach second base over the final 4 innings, and Spencer induced a crucial inning-ending 1-6-3 double play in the eighth inning to preserve the Cougar lead.

With the split, Azusa Pacific moves to 1-2 on the season, while Cal State San Bernardino is 2-1.  The Cougars will be back in action to start a 4-game series at home with Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday, at 5 p.m., weather permitting.
