Cougars Get PKd

AZUSA, Calif. – A pair of Yahir Ocampo Navarro second-half penalty kicks lifted Western Oregon to a 3-2 nonconference victory over Azusa Pacific Thursday night in the first meeting ever between the two longtime west coast programs.

Navarro's goals, his first of the young season, kept a scrambling Azusa Pacific at bay throughout the contest.  WOU never trailed in the game, but the score was tied twice, and Navarro erased the deadlock each time.  His first PK came in the 60th minute, and put the Wolves up 2-1 at the time.

Two minutes later, Azusa Pacific was granted its own PK which Luis Solis drilled home for his first goal of the season and the second of his career, knotting the game at 2-2.  Navarro then countered with his game-winning PK in the 73rd minute.

Western Oregon out-shot Azusa Pacific, 12-7, which included a 10-5 count on goal.  The Wolves had a goal waved off by an offsides call in the 55th minute.  The Cougars had a golden opportunity to even at the game in the 77th minute, but WOU keeper Andre Schlafli made a fine diving save to his right to thwart a low line drive from Cougar Mario Shuteriqi to preserve the Wolves' second victory in 3 games this season.

Western Oregon scored the game's first goal in the 20th minute off the foot of Jacob Garcia.  Shuteriqi answered less than 2 minutes later with his first goal to establish the game's 1-1 halftime score.

With the setback Azusa Pacific falls 1-2 on the season.  The Cougars return to play Saturday (Sept. 14) in a nonconference game at Cal Poly Pomona at 7 p.m.
