SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Great teams find a way to win games on the road, and No. 16 Azusa Pacific did just that on Saturday afternoon, beating host Point Loma by a 68-63 final score. The Cougars are now 21-3 overall, and a perfect 15-0 in PacWest play.
All five Cougar starters finished in double-figure scoring, led by 15 points apiece from
Paige Uyehara and
Amayah Kirkman. Uyehara also had five steals and three assists, while Kirkman grabbed six rebounds, dished out three assists and registered two steals.
Molly Whitmore finished with 14 points and seven rebounds,
Kelly Heimburger scored 12 points and had three blocks, while
TyLee Manuel added 10 points and seven rebounds.
How It Happened: Through the first three quarters, Point Loma led for nearly 27 of the 30 minutes played. While the lead never reached double-digits for the home team, the Cougars would draw within a possession time and time again, but the Sea Lions would respond and keep the visitors from gaining the lead.
That changed on the Cougars' final two possessions of the third quarter however, as
TyLee Manuel scored with a minute left in the period to draw the Cougars within one point at 52-51, and on their next trip down the court with just 15 seconds left, Manuel scored once again to put Azusa Pacific in front, 53-52. It was the Cougars' first lead since the first quarter, when they went up by a 12-10 score to end the opening 10 minutes of play.
To start the fourth, Point Loma took the lead back, scoring back-to-back buckets to go ahead 56-53. With 6:41 to play,
Amayah Kirkman regained the lead for the Cougars, knocking down a jumper in transition for the 59-58 lead. It would prove to be the final lead change of the contest, as the Cougars held the advantage for the remainder of the contest. Azusa Pacific's largest lead over the final six minutes was a six-point lead at 64-58, but the Sea Lions were able to pull within one possession as late as 66-63 with 1:40 on the clock. No points were scored until a pair of free throws by Kirkman with two seconds left put the game away for the Cougars.
By The Numbers: The Cougars made the most of their opportunities at the charity stripe in the game, finishing 100% from the free throw line for the first time this season, knocking 14 of 14 attempts. Both teams were able to create additional opportunities on the offensive end, with the Sea Lions grabbing 18 offensive rebounds and scoring 16 second chance points, while Azusa Pacific had 16 offensive boards and tallied 15 second chance points.
Up Next: A former GSAC rival and the newest member of the PacWest Conference is up next on the Cougars' schedule, as they will visit Westmont on Wednesday, February 14 in Santa Barbara. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
