AZUSA, Calif. - Azusa Pacific beat Academy of Art by a 6-1 score on Wednesday afternoon, and the Cougars have now improved to 11-6 this season with a current three-match win streak.Â
Carolyn Brooner and Katherine Nguyen were locked in from the outset of the match, as the duo put up a dominant 6-0 win in the No. 3 doubles matchup to give the Cougars an early advantage. Over on court No. 2, the Azusa Pacific pair of veterans Audrey Stewart and April Wong delivered the point-clinching win for the Cougars, finishing 6-3 to secure the 1-0 match lead for the hosts.
Madison Kane would keep the momentum rolling for the Cougars to open singles at No. 2, as she was the first victor by way of a straight-set (6-3, 6-1) win. For Kane, it was her sixth straight-set win of the season. Nguyen carried her dominance from doubles into singles at No. 6, where she won both sets 6-1, 6-1 to put Azusa Pacific in a comfortable 3-0 overall lead. Nguyen has now won her last seven consecutive singles matchups, with six of those coming in straight-set fashion.
Eleonora Liga would seal the deal for the Cougars on court No. 1, where she finished 6-2, 6-2 for Azusa Pacific's match-clinching fourth point. Liga, who was recently ranked the No. 4 singles player in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, has won 15 of her 16 singles matches in straight-sets this season.Â
Wong and Brooner added the point total for the Cougars, with Wong taking the No. 4 matchup 6-4, 6-3, and Brooner winning on court No. 3 by scores of 6-2, 6-3.Â
Up Next: The Cougars return to the courts tomorrow afternoon, when they host Concordia at 2:30 pm. Tomorrow's match will be the second time that the two sides have met this season, as Azusa Pacific claimed a 6-1 win down in Irvine on February 25.
