AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific swept Saturday's doubleheader against Colorado Christian to win the four-game nonconference baseball series with a 1-0 victory in an opening-game pitchers' duel before running away with a 13-2 win in the series finale.
A.J. Woodall threw a seven-inning complete-game shutout in the opener, scattering five hits while striking out four with no walks. Casey Dykstra laid out in left-center field for a highlight-reel catch for the final out, robbing Kaleb Sorenson of an extra-base hit in the top of the seventh to finish off the victory.
The first four hitters in the lineup (Justin Gomez, Osvaldo Tovalin, Griffen Herrera, Austin Russ) combined for all five of the Cougars' hits in the opener, and the same quartet combined to go 7-for-11 in the second game to lead the offense. Joe Quire Jr. hit his second grand slam of the season for one of Azusa Pacific's five home runs on the day.
With the sweep, Azusa Pacific improves to 6-3 on the season heading into its PacWest-opening series at Holy Names next week. Colorado Christian drops to 3-5 overall.
How It Happened (Game 1): The Cougars generated all the offense it needed within its first three batters, as Justin Gomez and Osvaldo Tovalin opened the game with consecutive singles. Although Colorado Christian starter Connor McCullum got a double play, Gomez scored from third for what turned out to be the game's only run.
Woodall took care of the rest, aided by a pair of double plays from the Azusa Pacific defense in the seven-inning masterpiece. Dykstra provided the highlight of the day by leaving his feet at full speed in left-center to make a diving catch that ended the game.
Gomez was 2-for-3 in the victory, while Joel Manzano led the Colorado Christian offense with a 2-for-3 performance. Woodall and McCullum each surrendered just five hits in a game that lasted just over an hour-and-a-half.
How It Happened (Game 2): Azusa Pacific scored runs in each of the first five innings of the seven-inning nightcap, including a seven-run explosion in the fourth inning which turned a 5-2 lead into a commanding 12-2 margin. Tovalin led the offense with a 4-for-4 effort, all singles, while Austin Russ, Mychael Goudreau, Joe Quire Jr., Cole Kleszcz, and Casey Dykstra each hit home runs in the 13-run, 15-hit outburst.
Three pitchers made appearances of at least two innings to combine for the 13-2 win. John Szczesny gave up two runs on three hits as he pitched first 2.2 innings. Anthony Mayorga tossed 2.1 scoreless frames with four strikeouts to pick up the victory, and Declan Kearney finished it off with another four strikeouts in two shutout innings.
Russ hit a solo home run in the Cougars' two-run first, and Dykstra added a two-run home run in the second inning to make it a 4-0 game. After Colorado Christian answered with two runs in the top of the third, Goudreau answered with a third-inning solo shot to make it 5-2, and Quire highlighted the seven-run fourth with a two-out grand slam off reliever Jarrod Rivera. Kleszcz made it back-to-back home runs with a solo shot to left, and the Cougars kept the rally going with a Tovalin RBI single that made it 12-2. Quire added a fifth-inning RBI double to round out the game scoring.
