ST. GEORGE, Utah -- Azusa Pacific's 16-game winning streak came to a sudden end Friday afternoon, as Dixie State scored 14 runs in the first five innings to race to a 14-3 victory over the Cougars, who went undefeated through the entire opening month of the season.
The Trailblazers scored six runs in the first inning alone, jumping out to an early 6-0 lead. Eight different Dixie State batters had multiple hits in the game, while the Cougars only managed to put together three runs on 10 hits while committing four errors defensively in its first setback of the 2018 campaign.
Osvaldo Tovalin, Aaron Roose, and Tim Lichty led the Azusa Pacific offense with two hits apiece, but the Cougars were limited to single runs in the third, fifth, and eighth innings.
With the loss, Azusa Pacific drops to 16-1 overall and 6-1 in PacWest play, while Dixie State is now 6-11 overall and 2-5 in PacWest play heading into Saturday's series finale.
What's Next: The teams wrap up the four-game PacWest series Saturday at noon (MST), at Bruce Hurst Field in St. George. The Cougars will remain on the road for another four-game PacWest series next week at Fresno Pacific.
How It Happened: Dixie State's first five batters all registered hits and eventually scored in a six-run first inning, with Logan Porter providing a two-run home run from the No. 3 spot in the lineup. The Cougars put runners at first and third with no outs in the third inning but only cashed in a single run, which was followed by outbursts of four runs in the third and three more in the fourth from the Trailblazers. By the time Azusa Pacific scored again in the fifth, Dixie State had built up a commanding 13-1 advantage.
With a single run in the bottom of the fifth, the Trailblazers wrapped up their scoring for the game at 14 runs. Roose hit a one-out double in the eighth inning and eventually scored the game's final run on a wild pitch.
