Azusa Pacific put on a thrilling Senior Day painting one last memory at home for their teammates. Rallying for a 5-4 victory over No. 9 University California, San Diego.
Results
The Cougars started the day off trailing 2-1 after doubles. At No. 3 the duo of
Tatiana Betancourt and
Kara Hinton were the first to fall 8-3.
Natalie Johnson and
Lisa Schneider were the only pairing to notch a doubles win, winning 8-2 at the No. 1 position. As double was coming to an end
Valeriia Kashina and partner
Jackie Resler found themselves recording an 8-4 deficit at the No. 2 spot.
Kashina playing her last match on her home court tied the match up in the No. 3 spot winning 6-4, 6-0 improving her career singles wins to 34-23. Hinton helped the Cougars take the lead registering a 7-6 (7-0), 6-1 win at the No. 4 position. The Tritons brought the match to a tie once again as Resler fell 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 5 slot. The score changed hands once again as No. 1 Johnson won 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 as her opponent retired in the third set. The match became neck-and-neck when the Tritons recorded a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Schneider in the No. 2 slot.

The match came down to Betancourt who fell 2-6 in her first set, won her second set 6-2, and was down 2-5 in the third set and fought off eight match points to win the final five to win 7-5.
Following the electrifying win, the team recognized seniors, Johnson, Schneider, Kashina, and
Nicole Arribere.
Johnson has been recognized as an All-PacWest second team three times and has been earned All-PacWest doubles three times partnered with
Emily Harris, Kashina, and Schneider. In Johnson's four-year career as a Cougar, she is ranked No. 1 in the record books for her 41 wins between singles and doubles. She has the fifth most total wins between No. 1 singles and doubles with 27 wins. Johnson is ranked second in the Azusa Pacific records for the most singles wins in one season with 20. She has the eighth most No. 1 singles wins of a Cougar with fourteenth, along with the eleventh most No. 1 singles wins with 9. Johnson is also ranked tenth with thirteenth for the most doubles wins at No. 1 rounding up her accolades.
Throughout Schneider's two years as a Cougar, she has been recognized by the PacWest as a Second team All-PacWest athlete along with the honor of All-PacWest doubles partnered with Johnson. She has totaled twenty-nine singles wins and twenty-three doubles wins in the 2 years at Azusa Pacific. Off the court, Schneider earned an All-PacWest Academic honor.
Senior Kashina earned Third-team All-PacWest her first year as a Cougar, that same season she was honored with an All-PacWest doubles partnered with Johnson. She has won thirty-four singles matches and forty-five doubles matches throughout her collegiate career at Azusa Pacific.
Arribere was recognized alongside the seniors after playing three seasons with the Cougars. She has only dropped two matches in her collegiate career, winning six singles matches and three doubles matches. She was honored as an All-PacWest academic athlete in 2016.
The Cougars take to the road Friday for a 4:00 p.m. matchup against Claremont-Mudd Scripps Colleges.
