Shark Week

AZUSA, Calif. -- No. 13-ranked Azusa Pacific was downed 7-2 on Wednesday at the Cougar Tennis Complex by No. 9 Hawai`i Pacific, which has beaten a nationally-ranked team for the third day in a row in its week-long trip to California.

Match Results

Lorena Gheoghe and Syna Kayser came back from down a break at No. 2 doubles to claim a 9-7 victory for a 2-1 lead after doubles and then claimed three straight-set victories in singles to clinch the win at 5-1 with the Cougars leading on all remaining courts.

Jackie Resler maintained her perfect singles record this season with a 6-2, 3-6, 10-8 victory at No. 6 singles to improve to 6-0 this season. In doubles, Resler and Valeriia Kashina boosted their winning streak to five matches with an 8-4 victory. Hawai`i Pacific won at No. 5 doubles 8-5.

Gheorghe gave the Sharks their first singles point with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph. Then nationally-ranked No. 41 Nicole Hoynaski defeated Lisa Schneider 6-4, 6-2 to put the Sharks a point away from victory, while Kayser led by a set and a double-break. However, Kashina fought back from the double-break deficit at No. 3 singles to force a second set tiebreaker, which Kayser won to clinch the match.

At No. 1 singles, No. 16 Natalie Johnson took the first set 6-3 against No. 15 Kristyna Hancarova, but a single break was the difference in the second set, which Hancarova won. The No. 3 player in the west region Hancarova then took the match tiebreaker for a 3-6, 6-3, 10-3 win.

The Cougars will play on Saturday at noon against No. 7 Nova Southeastern, which will be Hawai`i Pacific's opponent on Friday.
