AZUSA, Calif. – Old rivals. Same results.
The Cougars started in convincing fashion from the opening serve as they topped Westmont 9-0 on Wednesday.
Facing their former rivals from the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC), Azusa Pacific never relented in taking the team win. The Cougar doubles teams got up early breaks in each match. Natalie Johnson and Lisa Schneider won their fifth match of the season with an 8-4 win at the top spot. Kara Hinton and Lilit Varganyan followed that with an 8-3 decision while Valeriia Kashina and Jackie Resler won their team leading eighth match together with an 8-4 victory at the third position.
The first three singles spot were also the first three completed in which the Cougars fell in just five total games. Kashina was the first player done as she completed a double-bagel (6-0, 6-0) win at the No. 3 spot. Johnson won the at the No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-0 while Schneider took down her opponent 6-1, 6-2.
Lilit Vardanyan worked hard to get a three-set victory at the No. 4 slot. She won the first set 6-2 but dropped the second frame 6-3. In the super tiebreaker she pulled out a 10-5 victory.
Lindsey Yeom and Nicole Arribere stepped in nicely at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions respectively with straight set wins.
