Downing the Seawolves

AZUSA, Calif. – Down early, the Cougars never fretted.

Azusa Pacific rallied after facing a deficit at the conclusion of doubles to post a 6-3 victory over Sonoma State.

Match Results 

The 26th ranked Seawolves battled to take a 2-1 lead in the early going. After the No. 3 doubles tandem Jackie Resler and Valeriia Kashina cruised to an 8-1 victory, Sonoma State edged out a pair of wins at the top spots.

At the top spot Jensyn Warren and Jordyn Kearney fought off two match points in the tiebreaker before pulling out a 9-8 (8-6) victory against Natalie Johnson and Lisa Schneider. The Seawolves duo won the final four points of the tiebreaker.

A back-and-forth contest ensued at the second doubles position. Hillary Fazekas and Amanda Zuidema got a break late to get a 9-7 win and seemingly put the visitors in position for the win.

However, the team match from that point forward belong to the Cougars as they won the first five singles matches off the court. Azusa Pacific won every singles match in straight sets.

Kashina was the first singles match done as she posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the No. 3 slot. Johnson cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win at the top spot as to put the Cougars within two wins of the team triumph. Kara Hinton had little trouble in dispatching of her opponent in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) at the fifth position.

The team clinching win belonged to Resler who notched a 6-0, 7-6 (5) at the sixth spot. Lisa Schneider was the final singles win for Azusa Pacific as she fought hard for her 7-6 (1), 6-2 decision in the second slot.

Sonoma State won the final match on the court as Zuidema won 4-6, 6-3, 10-3.
