In a match-up of two nationally ranked teams, the Cougars swept the doubles matches en route to the 5-4 win against Cal State L.A.
Azusa Pacific, who came into the match ranked 14th in the nation, did just enough during singles play to top the country's 16th ranked squad.
In the first match off the courts, the tandem of Valeriia Kashina and Jackie Resler started the double success with an 8-3 win at the No. 3 slot. Natalie Johnson and Lisa Schneider quickly followed by posting an 8-2 victory in the first doubles match.
Lilit Varganyan and Kara Hinton battled in a tightly contested match-up with Elizaveta Sokolova and Isabella Lopez before taking an 8-6 victory.
Using that 3-0 lead heading into singles play, the Cougars won the first completed singles match when Jackie Resler didn't drop a game in posting a straight set win at the No. 6 position.
Regardless of their seemingly insurmountable deficit, the Golden Eagles won the next three matches to pull within one point of tying the team match. Schneider clinched the match with a 6-1, 7-6 win at the No. 2 spot to seal the team victory.
