GLENDORA, Calif. -- A trio of perfect singles results helped lead the NAIA's No. 5-ranked Azusa Pacific to a 9-0 win over Westmont Tuesday afternoon at Citrus College, its third straight win over an NAIA-ranked opponent.
After knocking off a pair of top-10 foes on the road, the Cougars quickly swept through doubles by a combined 24-5 margin. The match result was sealed when senior Casey Wetzig (No. 6 singles) and junior Leah Hoffee (No. 5 singles) wrapped up 6-0, 6-0 victories. Also posting a perfect 2-set sweep without surrendering a set was freshman Emily Harris at No. 4 singles.
Each of the remaining 3 singles matches were decided in straight sets, with the No. 3 matchup between Westmont's Jenna Nelson and Cougar freshman Kim Koetterheinrich serving as the most competitive. Koetterheinrich was a 6-4, 6-3 winner, improving to 3-2 in singles play this season.
In doubles, the sophomore tandem of Sarita Adhikary and Danielle Hoyme teamed up for Azusa Pacific's first win of the day, an 8-1 decision at No. 3 doubles in their first match as a doubles team. Another new pair at No. 1 doubles featured senior Sheryl Bon-Bakalov with junior Emily Ignas, and they registered an 8-3 win in the top doubles spot.
Junior Natalie McNall and freshman Molly Ruby rounded out the doubles sweep with an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles, improving their doubles record together this season to 3-0.
With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 8-1 overall, 5-1 GSAC, while Westmont falls to 0-7 overall, 0-4 GSAC.
