Quick Work in Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. –- The NAIA's No. 3-ranked Azusa Pacific scored 23 of the game's first 30 points to run away for a 90-60 Golden State Athletic Conference victory over Hope International Tuesday evening.

The victory is Azusa Pacific's eighth straight on the season and is the Cougars' 19th in a row over Hope International, which hasn't logged a victory at the Cougars' expense since 1988.

In tonight's win, the Cougars buried 8 of their first 11 shots which included a pair of 3-pointers to assume a quick 23-7 advantage less than 7 minutes into the game. Scott Zea and Mike Danielian buried treys to cap the game-opening explosion. Though the final result was academic, the Cougars nonetheless kept up the intensity, shooting a sizzling 57-percent (36-for-63) on the night. The Cougars led by as much as 37 at one point before settling for the 30-point victory, their tenth 30-point margin of victory in the past 11 meetings with the Royals.

Zea and Danielian led the Cougars with 15 points apiece. Khalif Ford added 14 and Demario Butler chipped in with 12. The quartet paced Azusa Pacific's hot shooting touch, torching the nets for a combined 22-for-31 (.710), which included an 8-for-17 clip from the arc.

Danielian, a redshirt freshman transfer from Cal State Fullerton, seems to be finding his renowned shooting touch that led him to the 2005 L.A. City high school scoring title. After opening the season with a chilly 32-percent shooting clip through the first 11 games, Danielian has warmed up by draining 11 of his past 21 shots, which includes a half-dozen 3-pointers in the past 2 games.

All 13 Cougars who played scored. Hope International, which was plagued by 20 turnovers that Azusa Pacific turned into 31 points, was paced by Travis Hardeman's 9 points.

With the victory Azusa Pacific improves to 12-1 overall, 2-1 in the GSAC, while Hope International falls to 3-11 overall, 1-3 in the GSAC.
