AZUSA, Calif. -- Shannon Coe had 2 goals and an assist and All-American Stephanie Bays added a goal and 2 assists to lift Azusa Pacific to a 3-0 GSAC win over Vanguard Saturday in Azusa.
With the win, the NAIA's No. 2-ranked Cougars improve to 10-0-1 overall, 6-0 GSAC. It is the Cougars' eighth straight 10-win campaign and the fourth time in program history they reach 10 wins without a loss. Vanguard drops to 6-6-2, 1-4-1.
Vanguard out-shot the Cougars 12-8 on the night, and the Cougars got just 4 shots on goal, but 3 of them scored.
Coe broke through first in the 30th minute when she received a beautiful through ball from Bays down the left side. Coe touched it once and fired a low shot to the right corner and past a diving Kim Becher.
The Lions had their best chance to get an equalizer just 9 minutes into the second half when they had a flurry in front of the Cougar net. With a wide open net after Cougar GK Jill Colfer made one save, Randie Massro cleared a ball off the line to preserve the lead.
Minutes after that, Coe returned the favor to Bays as she fed her a ball in the box. Bays was nearly pulled down by a Lion defender, but she was able to stay on her feet, spin to her left and rifle a ball into the left corner for a 2-0 Cougar lead in the 59th minute.
Just one minute later, Bays won a ball in the midfield and found Kelly Goudge streaking down the right flank. Goudge crossed the ball into the box to a wide open Coe, who headed the ball back across the goal and into the side net for her tenth goal of the season.
Colfer made 5 saves, including 4 in the second half, to pick up her fifth shutout of the season.
The stage is now set for next Tuesday's showdown with undefeated and No. 9-ranked Biola. The Cougars host the Eagles at 7 p.m. Both teams come in with identical 10-0-1, 6-0 records.
