A Well-Timed Victory

REDLANDS, Calif. – Is this a sign of things to come?  Have the Cougars turned a corner?  If so, the timing couldn't be any better.

After dropping 5 of the past 6 games vs. NCAA Division III teams, and scoring just 2 goals in that stretch, Azusa Pacific seemingly snapped out of the offensive doldrums tonight, scoring a goal in each half to down the University of Redlands, 2-0, at Farquhar Field Wednesday night.

As the Cougars begin to turn their collective eyes on potential postseason play, it was the team leaders who stepped forward.  Seniors Lauren Grissom and Julia Galdamez each scored their team-leading sixth goals of the season to pace a Cougar attack that produced 22 shots in the game, including 14 on frame.

Grissom got the Cougars going with a goal less than 10 minutes into the game when she rifled a shot from 16 yards out past outstretched UR keeper Nicole Immoos.  Galdamez tapped the ball through traffic to Grissom, who turned to her left and unleashed her shot.

Grissom's tally made up for a Cougar goal 5 minutes into the game that was negated by an offside call.

Azusa Pacific controlled play much of the night, and the Cougars' size and physicality proved to be a constant nemesis for Redlands.

Galdamez doubled the Cougar advantage in the 69th minute when Gianna Vera fired a through-ball from well behind the midfield stripe that Galdamez corralled at the top of the box, side-stepping Immoos, to put the ball into an empty net.

That proved to be more than enough as freshman Paloma Platas collected a career-high 6 saves on the way to her seventh shutout of the season.
With the win Azusa Pacific improves to 9-5-2, while Redlands falls to 4-13-2.

The Cougars now await the scheduling of their next opponent.  A regular-season-ending contest against Crestmont College, originally scheduled for Friday (Oct. 30), was cancelled earlier this week.  Azusa Pacific is likely to earn at least an at-large bid into the National Christian College Athletic Association championship tournament (Nov. 30-Dec. 1) if not earn the west region's bid later in the month.

Potential opponents in the coming weeks are still to be determined.
