AZUSA, CALIF. – Mandy Dorow ran her personal winning streak to 11 straight and Jennifer Robison celebrated her return to the line-up with a game-winning hit as the NAIA's No. 3-ranked Azusa Pacific swept 2-time defending GSAC champ Vanguard, 5-0 and 5-4, to improve its hold on the GSAC lead.
Dorow, a junior pitcher out of Riverside City College, fired a 5-hit shutout at the Lions in the opening game, striking out 4 in the process. She got all the runs she needed in fifth inning when the Cougars strung hits together 4 hits, including a pair of doubles, to tally all 5 runs. Laura Powers' double to left-center put Cougars and second and third. Jennifer Stark's single followed by a fielder's choice by Alisa Arrigoni scored Lorna Lyttle and Cassie Lakey (running for Powers) to give Azusa Pacific all it needed with a 2-0 lead.
The rest was up to Dorow, whose shutout was never threatened the rest of the way. Since February 27, Dorow is an impressive 11-0 with a microscopic 0.58 ERA. She has allowed just 6 earned runs in her past 72 innings of work, striking out 37 in the process. Additionally, she has posted 5 shutouts in those 11 appearances.
In the second game, the Cougars let a 4-1 lead slip through their hands when Vanguard tallied 3 runs in the top of the fifth to knot the score at 4-4. However, Robison, playing for the first time since suffering a broken right hand back on Feb. 18, lined a 2-out single in the bottom of the seventh to score Jennifer Powell with the game-winning run and lift the Cougars to the sweep of Vanguard.
Senior pitcher Jodi Miller picked up her team-leading 15th win of the season, surrendering just 4 hits in the game.
On the day, Stark was 4-for-6 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Freshman second baseman Jennie Waleszonia was 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI.
With the wins Azusa Pacific improves to 28-9 overall, 9-3 in the GSAC, 2 games ahead of Point Loma Nazarene. Since Feb. 26, Azusa Pacific is 20-3.
