Cougars' Sweep Out Regular-Season Finale

WEST COVINA, CALIF. -- Azusa Pacific nearly assured itself a spot in the NAIA West Regional (May13-15 in Costa Mesa) by sweeping Biola, 4-3, and 2-1, Friday afternoon at Jonathon DeYoung Field in West Covina.

In the opening game, Biola took a 3-0 lead through 4 innings of play, but Cougar freshman Jennifer Robison lined a 2-out single to put APU on the board in the bottom of the fifth. In the following inning, freshman Lorna Lyttle crushed a 2-run home run to knot the game at 3-3. With 2 outs in the bottom of the seventh, Jennifer Stark singled home Robison with the game-winning run.

In the nightcap, Robison again played a key role in the extra inning victory, singling home Powell with 1 out in the bottom of the eighth inning to the give Azusa Pacific its seventh 1-run victory of the campaign and its second extra-inning win of the season. In the third inning, Yvonne Ale's 2-out single sent home Heather Jacobson, who had doubled earlier in the frame, to knot the game at 1-1.

Junior pitcher Jodi Miller threw 11 1/3 innings of one-run softball over the course of the two games, allowing just 6 hits while picking the win in both games to push her season record to 20-11.

Biola was paced by Serina Mares who went 5-for-8 at the plate in two games, scoring twice.

With the sweep Azusa Pacific finishes the regular-season at 31-21-1 overall, 11-9 in the GSAC, while Biola closes out the year at 22-23 overall, 5-15 in the GSAC.
