Pitching Powers Cougars Over CBU

WEST COVINA, Calif. -- Sophomore Gina Gepford fired her second no-hitter of her collegiate career to highlight Azusa Pacific's 8-0 and 6-0 Golden State Athletic Conference sweep of Cal Baptist at Jonathon DeYoung Field in West Covina Saturday afternoon.

Gepford, who picked up a 5-inning no-hitter in last year's NAIA regional opening round victory over Bethany, was steady through today's victory over Cal Baptist, overcoming a pair of Cougar errors while walking just one Lancer to secure the no-no. She lost her chance at a complete-game no-hitter when the Cougars run-ruled CBU with 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth. Lorna Lyttle's third-inning grand slam put the Cougars up 5-0 and allowed Gepford to cruise through her final 3 innings of work to push her record to 10-9 on the season. Lyttle finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with 5 RBIs. Jennifer Stark and Laura Powers each went 3-for-4 for the Cougars.

Junior pitcher Jodi Miller followed Gepford with a gem of a 3-hitter of her own and her sixth shut-out victory of the season. The Cougar offense didn't let up either, picking up 10 more hits. Sophomore Alisa Arrigoni paced the offensive outburst by going 3-for-3 at the plate, which included a 2-run double that put the Cougars up 6-0 in the third inning.

With the sweep, Azusa Pacific improves to 27-19-1 overall, and 7-7 in the GSAC. Cal Baptist falls to 25-19 overall, 4-8 in the GSAC.
