Cal Baptist Sneaks Out a Split

WEST COVINA, Calif. -- Cal Baptist took advantage of an Azusa Pacific base-running blunder in game two of a Golden State athletic conference doubleheader to salvage a split with the No. 19–ranked Cougars, losing the first game in 8 innings, 4-3, before winning the second game, 5-4, Saturday afternoon in West Covina.

Cal Baptist exploded in game two for 3 runs in the first inning off Alisa Arrigoni. After the Cougars answered with 4 runs in their half of the inning to take a 4-3 lead. Both teams put in game one starting pitchers, Kerry Martin for Azusa Pacific and Jamie Junk for Cal Baptist.

Cal Baptist tied the game at four in the second inning, and Azusa Pacific had a chance to take the lead in the third after Laura Powers smacked the deep fly ball to right field. However, Arrigoni did not make it back to tag third base and missed a chance for a sacrifice fly run that would've given the Cougars a 5-4 lead.

The Lancers scored in the fifth inning when Junksingled home Renae Van Dam for the eventual game winner.

For Azusa Pacific, Arrigoni and Jennifer Hendry each had two hits, well Michelle Mendoza led Cal Baptist with 3 hits. Junk shut the cougars out over the final 6 innings to earn the victory.

Game one was scoreless until the the Cougars scored a single run in the fourth inning. Kelly Hibma walked, was sacrificed a second, went to third on a passed ball, and scored on a wild pitch. The Lancers who had only one hit going to the sixth inning got a run in the sixth and the seventh to push the game into extra innings. Cal Baptist got a run an eighth off of the international tiebreaker, but Azusa Pacific pushed across two runs in the bottom of the inning to get the win. Arrigoni's 1-out single drove home Hibma with the game-winning run.

Arrigoni had 2 hits for the Cougars, while Michele Wells led the Lancers 2 hits and 2 RBIs.
