Biography

1998:After cementing her name in the Cougar record books, sophomore Kerry Martin returns as the ace of the pitching staff . . . Has added a screwball to her already wide repertoire of 5 pitches . . . Increased velocity on her fastball looks to make her potent change even more effective . . . Strong work ethic and a great focus.

LEHMAN’S LYRIC: "Kerry has proved to be the best pitcher in the GSAC. Opposing coaches agree about her ability and realize the presence she has on the mound. She has an incredible mental focus and a great approach to the game, making her very hard to rattle. She makes her team confident behind her. She continues to work on her location and is adding a screwball. She is the type of player around which you can build a program."

1997: Enjoyed a remarkable 1997 freshman season, earning a school and GSAC record 43 victories in 323.2 innings of work . . . Appeared in 55 of the Cougars’ 63 games, starting 49 . . . Earned All-GSAC honors for her efforts . . . Threw 17 shut-outs on the year . . . Already is among Azusa Pacific pitching greats, holding the career shut-out mark (17), and is fourth in wins (43), appearances (55), and innings (323.2) . . . Named NAIA and GSAC Pitcher of the Week for Apr. 1 . . . Named Most Valuable Pitcher of the UCSD Triton Classic.

REDONDO UNION HIGH: A 4-year varsity softball standout at Redondo (Calif.) Union High, from which she graduated from in 1996 . . . Named All-CIF and Seahawk team MVP as a sophomore, junior and senior . . . Voted the South Bay Daily Breeze Player-of-the-Year following her 1996 senior campaign . . . Honored with all-state player recognition . . . Went 23-6 with a 0.38 ERA her senior season and started the South Bay All-Star Classic . . . Named Redondo Union Most Outstanding Player all 4 years . . . Threw 199 innings, striking out 177 in 1996 . . . Career marks included an 82-21 record with 600 strikeouts and a 0.28 ERA . . . Finished third on the CIF career wins list.

PERSONAL: Born Dec. 5, 1977, in Fontana, Calif., to Glen and Nancy Martin . . . Enjoys exercising and shopping . . . Earned the Freeman Hospital’s Scholar-Athlete Award and the Redondo Union High Academic President’s award in 1996 . . . A liberal studies major . . . Plans to teach elementary school and coach softball following graduation.
