CLAREMONT, CALIF. -- The NAIA's No. 6-ranked Azusa Pacific got double-digit scoring from 6 different players en route to an easy 98-60 win at Claremont-Mudd Friday night.
Seldom-used
Jon Dean (Tuolomne, Calif./Motherlode HS) and
Ty Clark (Auburn, Calif./Placer HS), who are the Cougars' 2 lowest scoring players, surprisingly led the Cougars in scoring. Dean tallied a career-high 15 points on 5-for-7 shooting, which included a 3-for-5 clip from 3-point land. The junior guard, who entered the game averaging just 2.8 points and 7 minutes a game, had a previous career-high of 8 points vs. La Sierra this year. Meanwhile, Clark, a senior swingman, came off the bench to pour in a season-high 14 points on 7-for-7 shooting from the floor. Clark came into the Claremont game averaging just 2.4 points in 8 minutes of play per game.
Junior guard
T.J. Walker (Modesto, Calif./Modesto HS) added 13 points and 5 assists, while senior
Jeremy DeVries (Mt. Vernon, Wash./Mt. Vernon HS) chipped in another 13 points and a team-high 4 steals to give him 40 on the season (2.8 avg.). Senior
Brad Alley (La Verne, Calif./San Dimas HS) scored 12 off the bench to lead a set of Cougar reserves who out-scored Claremont's bench, 62-24.
The Cougars used a hot shooting touch to jump out to a 45-26 half-time leading, canning 20 of their first 37 shots. They continued the fine shooting in the second half, and finished the game making 40-of-70 shots (.571, the second straight game the Cougars have shot .571 from the floor).
Sophomore
Justin Leslie (Nuevo, Calif./Perris HS), starting in the absence of center
Nate Getz, who should return to action sometime next week, registered 10 points and a team-high 9 rebounds.
Though Azusa Pacific has now won 7 straight over Claremont-Mudd and leads the all-time series, 24-14, the Staggs have been notorious for giving the NAIA power Cougars fits since 1992. However, tonight's 38-point victory is the largest in series history (the previous largest margin of victory was a Cougar 33-point decision, 86-53, in 1974).
With the win, Azusa Pacific keeps a pair of winning streaks in line. On the season, the Cougars have now won 7 straight to improve their record to 14-2. Additionally, the win over CMC gives Azusa Pacific 22 consecutive victories over NCAA Division III teams. With the loss, Claremont-Mudd, which was led by Joe Selander's 13 points, falls to 4-4.
