Cougars Tune Up Indoors, Dominate Outdoors in Statement Weekend

APU captures multiple event wins at NAU Tune Up and Pomona-Pitzer Invite, highlighted by a meet record in the discus and sprint victories.

The Azusa Pacific track & field program split its weekend between altitude and sunshine, competing at the NAU Tune Up indoor meet Friday and Saturday before turning in a dominant outdoor showing at the Pomona-Pitzer Invite on Saturday.

Competing against strong fields in Flagstaff, the Cougars posted podium finishes and solid marks in their final indoor tune-up.

Trinity Miller sprinted to a third-place finish in the women's 200 meters, clocking a 24.71 in a competitive field.

Jodian Stewart soared to a first-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 5.82 meters, continuing her consistent indoor campaign with another event win.

On the men's side, Nicholas Jordan cleared 4.60 meters in the pole vault to finish eighth, capping a steady performance in a deep field of vaulters.

Back in Southern California, APU wasted no time making noise in its outdoor season.

On the Track

Avery Coker (15.15) and Emma Hein delivered a 2-3 finish in the women's 100m hurdles, setting the tone early.

Robert Thompson blazed to victory in the men's 200 meters, crossing in 21.93 to win a stacked field of 27 competitors.

In the Field

The women's discus squad delivered the performance of the weekend, sweeping the podium in dominant fashion. Kristina Rakocevic shattered the meet record set in 2019 (44.68m) with a massive toss of 50.51 meters. Hannah Richardson (44.51m) and Madison Gallacher (40.45m) secured second and third to complete the sweep.

In the jumps, Sierra Nelson captured the women's long jump title with a leap of 5.10m, while John Thoreson placed second in the men's long jump at 6.58m.

Dejuan Walcott won the men's triple jump with a mark of 13.69m, and Zania Ruffin led a 1-2 Cougar finish in the women's triple jump at 11.38m, with Olivia Baerny close behind at 11.10m.
