Deadlocked Duel

Cornerstone Cup Ends in 2-2 Split.

Azusa, Calif. - The annual Cornerstone Cup Series between Azusa Pacific and Biola ended in a 2-2 split after the teams traded victories in Saturday's doubleheader at Cougar BB Complex. Azusa Pacific claimed a 3-2 win in Game 3, while Biola answered with a 9-6 victory in Game 4, securing the series tie.

Game 3: Azusa Pacific Rallies for Late Win

In the opener of the doubleheader, they overcame an early deficit to edge Biola, 3-2. Biola struck first, scoring two runs in the second inning behind an RBI double from Nick Madole and a sacrifice fly from Noah Ruiz.

APU remained scoreless until the sixth, when Jacob Hayes launched a two-run home run to center field to even the game at 2-2. One inning later, Danny Yanez crushed a solo homer, giving the Cougars a 3-2 lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Reliever Jake Vargas (2-2) earned the win after two perfect innings, and Joel Tornero picked up his sixth save. Despite Biola outhitting Azusa Pacific 11-6, timely pitching and home runs lifted it to victory.

Game 4: Biola Explodes Late to Take the Series Finale

In the final game of the series, Biola turned the tables, using a four-run seventh inning to claim a 9-6 win.

The game was a back-and-forth battle, with Biola scoring twice in the first inning before they tied it at 2-2 in the third on Jacob Hayes' two-run homer. The Cougars took the lead in the fourth and fifth innings, going up 6-5 behind Antonio Lujan's clutch two-RBI single.

However, Biola broke through in the seventh, as Noah Ruiz crushed a three-run home run, followed by a solo shot from Isaiah Leon, flipping the score to 9-6. It couldn't recover, as Dylan Alanis (2-1) shut the door with three scoreless innings of relief.
