AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific needed just over an hour to clinch a win on Thursday afternoon before going on to defeat No. 28 Colorado Mesa 7-0 at the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex as the Cougars remained undefeated this season against PacWest opponents.

Singles were played first, and Azusa Pacific won five of the six singles matches without dropping more than four games in any of those matches, rushing out to a 5-0 lead. The final two points took longer but Soeren Grandke came through in a second-set tiebreaker at No. 2 singles. Then Sam Bergstrand and Andrew Lee-Bliss clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win to complete the sweep.

Mark Bohren now has 600 career wins as the Azusa Pacific men's tennis head coach. The first win for the dean of Azusa Pacific coaches came in 1996 and in his 30th season he now averages 20 wins per year at the helm of the program.

The Cougars now have five wins over teams that are currently in the ITA National Rankings and Thursday's 7-0 win was the most lopsided of those wins. Azusa Pacific is now 12-3 on the season and 9-1 against NCAA Division II teams.

Max Schmidhauser led the way on the Cougars' speedy start, winning 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. Then Brody Bohren picked up his second win in a row with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph. Elias Emilio Walter also dropped only two games en route to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Henry Scheck.

Miha Velicki dropped only three games in his 6-2, 6-1 win, which lasted just over an hour. Then Joan Crespo won his match 6-2, 6-2. Grandke's match took a bit longer and the second set was extended into a tiebreak by Philemon Jabin, but Grandke ensured that the Cougars didn't lose a set in singles as he polished off a 6-4, 7-6 win.

In doubles, Azusa Pacific won at No. 1 doubles with Walter and Grandke winning 6-3. The Mavericks fought back at No. 2 doubles where Scheck and Diogo Manzano earned a 7-5 win over Schmidhauser and Jacobus Du Plessis.

The No. 3 doubles set didn't begin until a court was made available, and the doubles point hung in the balance as Bergstrand and Lee-Bliss stepped on the court. The two freshmen put together an impressive performance in their debut as a doubles team and earned a 6-3 win to finish the sweep. As a team, the Cougars are now 11-3 at the No. 3 doubles position.

Grandke picked up his team-best 13th win of the season in singles. Velicki and Bohren each earned their second wins in a row, joining Grandke for the team's longest active streaks in singles. In doubles, Grandke and Walter have now won five in a row together.

Azusa Pacific has the weekend off but will get an early start next week with No. 47 MSU Denver coming into town on Tuesday. The Roadrunners swept Hawai`i Hilo twice and has only lost one team point to a PacWest opponent so far this year.
