Biography

THIS YEAR: Four years after ending his tennis career to focus on track & field as a mid-distance runner, Schmidhauser came to Azusa Pacific to make his return to tennis last year. The two-time Rhode Island State Singles Champion, who went undefeated during his high school career, comes to Azusa Pacific as a grad transfer. The son of Lucie Schmidhauser, an NCAA Division I National Champion as a player at Texas and 2023 Ivy League Coach of the Year, he will add depth to the Cougars' singles lineup.

2024: Earned Academic All-PacWest honors… Won all seven of his completed matches in singles, dropping only three sets all season…  Went 4-0 in singles against PacWest opponents including a win at No. 5 singles against Colorado Mesa.
 
TCU:
Competed in cross country and track & field under Coach Lisa Morgan for one year as a freshman… Ran the 10K at the Arturo Barrios Invitational, recording a time of 29:48.3… In track & field, ran the 800 meters in a time of 2:03.93 at the TCU-Lowdon Track & Field Complex.
 
HIGH SCHOOL:
Was a three-sport athlete at Classical High School in Providence, RI, where he graduated in 2020… Competed in tennis under Coach Steven Cohen as a sophomore and junior after moving to Providence… Immediately became the best player in the state, winning back-to-back honors as the Rhode Island Player of the Year… As a junior, he defended his title as the Rhode Island State Champion, completing a second-consecutive undefeated season… During his junior year, he began cross training with cross country and track & field, but then decided to end his tennis career to focus on running… In his junior year, he was part of the 4x400 Outdoor Rhode Island State Championship team… In his senior year, he helped break the school record in the same event and set a PR in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.2 seconds… Helped the Classical cross country team take third place at state, equaling the school’s best result.

PERSONAL: Born on September 28, 2001 in Austin, Tex., to Eric and Lucie Schmidhauser… Has one older sister, Grace… Plays right-handed with a two-handed backhand… His mother, Lucie, played women’s tennis for the Texas Longhorns, where she won an NCAA National Championship and was a two-time All-American, and ranked No. 1 during the 1993-94 season after winning the Indoor National Championship… She is now head coach at Brown, where she has been at the helm since 2018 and was named the 2023 Ivy League Coach of the Year… Received undergraduate degree from Boston University and is now pursuing a masters in strategic communication… Desires to pursue a career coaching college tennis after finishing his masters… Enjoys watching the NBA, NFL, and following politics.
