AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific made quick work of another nationally-ranked PacWest opponent, rushing to a 4-0 lead to clinch the win over MSU Denver before reaching a final score of 5-2 as the PacWest Team of the Week picked up its third win in a row on Tuesday afternoon at the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex.
 
Four Cougars won their singles matches, giving up seven or less games to secure their 29th win in a row over PacWest opponents. The No. 9 Cougars are now 13-3 on the season, while the No. 47 Roadrunners drop to 9-10 with the loss.
 
After taking the doubles point, Grandke got the Cougars' first singles victory at the No. 2 position, taking out Alejandro Jimenez 6-2, 6-3. The PacWest leader in singles victory has now won seven sets in a row in singles.
 
David James Brownlee won at No. 4 singles by a similar score, 6-1, 6-3 in his return to the singles court after taking the last two matches off. His third-consecutive straight-sets win over PacWest opponents gave the Cougars a 3-0 lead.
 
Elias Emilio Walter then clinched the victory in a battle of nationally-ranked opponents. No. 27 Walter got through in straight sets against No. 35 Lluc Limongi Ollers, 6-3, 6-4. Walter is now 9-2 this season in his No. 1 singles matches.
 
Brody Bohren earned his third win in a row, surviving a complicated end to his match to win in straight sets. He led 6-1 and was up two breaks in the second set. However, Maximo Lawlor came back and even served for the set at 6-5, but Bohren broke back and won the tiebreaker for a 6-1, 7-6(3) victory.
 
The Roadrunners took the final two singles matches. Hector Cebrian Moral came back after Joan Crespo took the first-set tiebreaker to win 6-7(5), 6-1, 12-10 in the superbreaker at No. 5 singles. Then Marco Jalalian won at No. 3 singles, 7-5, 7-5.
 
In doubles, Bohren and Brownlee earned their fifth win as a team with a 6-2 triumph at No. 2 doubles. They have now won three of their last four doubles matches.
 
The No. 1 doubles match featured the top-2 teams in the West Region according to the ITA Rankings as Walter and Grandke took on Alessandro Munoz and Jalalian. The Cougars came out on top in the battle of nationally-ranked doubles teams, 6-3. Grandke and Walter are now 8-1 since becoming a doubles partnership with six wins in a row.
 
Azusa Pacific will hit the road for the first time since April to go face Biola on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. The Cougars won the first meeting this season, 5-2. Biola is coming off a 4-3 loss to MSU Denver on Monday.
