AZUSA, Calif. –
Brody Bohren snapped a slow start to his 2025 campaign with a big win when his team needed him, moving up to the No. 5 singles spot to secure a 6-4, 6-2 win that clinched Azusa Pacific's 4-3 win over Hawai`i Hilo on Tuesday afternoon at the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex.
With a strong performance in doubles and a pair of quick wins in singles, the Cougars jumped out to an early 3-1 lead. The contest had a chance to get significantly more complicated, but Bohren prevented the Vulcans from having that from happening with his straight sets win.
The first set between Bohren and Yu-Jhe Du was on serve the whole way until the tenth game when Bohren finally got a break to take the opening set. In the second set Bohren took an early lead and held onto it before he broke again in the final game to secure the win for the Cougars.
No. 7 Azusa Pacific improves to 11-3 on the season with the win over Hawai`i Hilo and remains undefeated against PacWest opponents, including now four 4-3 wins. No. 43 Hawai`i Hilo drops to 3-6 with a 1-5 record against PacWest teams so far this season, although aside from the two losses at MSU Denver all the matches have been close.
In doubles,
Joan Crespo and
Miha Velicki won at No. 3 doubles 6-3 for their third win in a row as a duo. The Cougars led 5-3 on the other two remaining doubles courts, and
Elias Emilio Walter and
Soeren Grandke were the first to clinch. They broke at 4-3 and then held serve to clinch the doubles point, improving to 6-1 as a team.
Agustin Gentile got the Vulcans on the board with his 6-3, 6-3 win over Crespo at No. 4 singles, but the Cougars quickly reestablished the lead. Grandke won first, 6-3, 6-3 over veteran Filippo di Perna and then Velicki won right after, 6-2, 6-1.
Bohren and
Max Schmidhauser both won their opening set, but Schmidhauser went down at break at No. 6 singles early in his second set. Meanwhile at No. 1 singles reigning PacWest Player of the Week Jaime Paquet led Walter, reigning PacWest Player of the Year, 7-5 after the first set.
Still, the Vulcans were going to have to go through Bohren to get the upset, and Bohren didn't leave any chance to that. He dominated throughout the second set and lifted his team to their 27
th-consecutive win and counting over PacWest opponents.
Walter came back to take the second set in his match but ultimately fell as Paquet won 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 in the first win for a PacWest player over Walter since 2023. Schmidhauser also eventually lost in three sets with Iori Furuhata earning a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win.
Azusa Pacific resumes play after just one day of rest, hosting No. 29 Colorado Mesa with first serve scheduled for 1 p.m.
