AZUSA, Calif. – The Cougars and Silverswords took turns lighting up the scoreboard in their second doubleheader in three days, with Chaminade taking the opening game by a 9-4 final before the Cougars pounced on the Chaminade bullpen for a 15-2 victory in the nightcap at the Cougar Baseball Complex.
Game One:Â Chaminade 9, Azusa Pacific 4
All four Azusa Pacific runs came via the long ball, starting with a solo shot by Elijah Cook in the bottom of the second. Blake Hagerty had thrown two shutout innings in his first start in a Cougar uniform, but gave up a walk and a hit batter before departing the game with two out in the third having not given up a hit. The new pitcher gave up an RBI single, a walk, and a grand slam to see the Silverswords jump out to a 5-1 lead.
The Cougars immediately got one back on a solo home run down the right field line by Luke Denos. Then in the sixth, Cook hit a two-run shot to cut the deficit to 5-4. But with a runner on first and one out, the Cougars had three left-handed batters in a row coming up and the Silverswords brought in a lefty reliever to face them. He got a double play to retire the side in the sixth, and would finish the game allowing just one baserunner over the final 3.2 innings while the Chaminade offense put up three more runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to seal the win. Cook had a three-hit game for the Cougars while Gabe Jacobs held the Silverswords to just one run over the final 2.2 innings.
Game Two:Â Azusa Pacific 15, Chaminade 2
For the first time in the series, Chaminade scored first, pushing a single run across in the top of the third, the only run they scored off starter Damian Pasillas. The Cougars would answer right back in the bottom of the inning. Allan Camarillo singled with one out, stole second, and came around to tie the game on a two-out Mikey Easter double. Chaminade retook the lead with a solo homer in the top of the fourth, but that would be the last run they would score in the series.
In the bottom half of the fourth, the floodgates opened. The first three batters of the inning reached, loading the bases and forcing a pitching change. Bryce Robinette came in as a pinch hitter and was hit by an 0-1 delivery, forcing in the tying run. Elijah Morgan then also pinch hit and singled in two runs. Camarillo followed with a double to left that scored two more runs, giving the team a 6-2 lead. Camarillo would score on a balk to round out a six-run inning that saw the Cougars bring 11 runs to the plate.
After Adrian Hernandez was able to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth, Camarillo got his second two-run hit in the bottom half of the inning. Stephen Lucasiewicz doubled in another run to make the score 10-2. And the Cougars would add five more in the sixth, highlighted by a grand slam from Morgan, the 11th home run the Cougars hit in the series. Camarillo and Morgan drove in 10 runs between them, while five Cougar pitchers combined to hold Chaminade to just four hits in the game.
