Match Recap: Women's Tennis | | Jared Pine

Early Risers

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific women's tennis hit the road early on Monday morning for a 9:30 a.m. match at Westmont, but the early wake-up call posed no problem for the Cougars, who cruised to a 7-0 victory by winning all 12 singles sets over the Warriors at the Abbott Tennis Courts.

Azusa Pacific won nine of the 15 sets between singles and doubles by scores of either 6-0 or 6-1 in the statement win. Shannele Lopez triumphed at No. 6 singles 6-1, 6-0 for her first singles victory of the season to highlight the Cougars' dominant performance.

With their fourth win in a row to start the season, the Cougars are also 2-0 on the road and have beaten three PacWest opponents. This was the 25th-straight win over Westmont; a streak that dates back to when both programs were in the old Golden State Athletic Conference.

The freshman duo of Karola Suviste and Stina Larsson made their debut at No. 1 doubles and continued their hot start to their careers with a 6-1 victory. After Westmont's paring of Lauren Gee and Sophia Ostovany took the No. 2 doubles set, the Cougars claimed the doubles point with a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles.

In the third position, Julia Jordan partnered with Lopez for the first time, and the two veterans claimed the doubles point easily to give the Cougars the early lead on Monday morning.

In singles, Jordan played No. 1 singles for the first time in her career. She faced a tough opponent in Francesca Aguirre but came through for a 7-5, 6-2 win. She is now 3-1 on the season and has won all six sets that she has played against the Warriors in her career.

Katherin Nguyen improved to 3-1 in singles this year with her 6-4, 6-2 triumph at No. 3 singles. It was just the third time in her career that she has played No. 3 singles and she has never lost more than four games in a set when playing in that position in the lineup.

The Cougars' trio of freshmen remained impressive with Tina Moser, Larsson, and Suviste all recording at least one bagel en route to straight-set victories. Moser won at No. 5 singles 6-3, 6-0, while Larsson and Suviste each won their matches 6-0, 6-1. On the day, Larsson and Suviste each lost only two games in total between singles and doubles.

For the season, Larsson and Moser have each won all of their singles sets and have only lost a total of only 27 games combined in 16 sets. As a group, the three freshmen are 11-1 in singles through the first four matches.

The Cougars return to the Munson and Bavougian Tennis Complex on Friday afternoon to host Hope International at 2:30 p.m. Azusa Pacific is undefeated all-time against Hope International, but this will be the first meeting between the two former GSAC opponents since 2013.
