AZUSA, Calif. – Valentine's Day included eight love sets for Azusa Pacific women's tennis, which defeated Hope International 7-love on February 14 at the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex for the Cougars' fifth-consecutive win to start the season.
The first three love sets all came in doubles as the Cougars' pairs won all three doubles matches 6-0 to earn the first point of the day.
Vini Bautista and
Shannele Lopez played doubles together in a team match for just the second time and the first time in almost two years. This time the result was very different, getting the first win of the day.
The other two doubles wins by the same score came from
Stina Larsson and
Karola Suviste at No. 1 and
Katherine Nguyen with
Tina Moser at No. 2. Larsson and Suviste have a team-best 5-0 record in doubles, leading the Cougars' overall record of 12-2 in doubles sets this season.
In singles, the love sets kept coming as Suviste added two more in her 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles. She has won four love sets in singles already this year. Bautista was the second to win, triumphing 6-0, 6-1 with
Tina Moser finishing right after her, 6-2, 6-0. Moser's win clinched the victory and pushed her record on the season to 5-0.
Lopez also remained undefeated on the season, having little trouble earning her 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles. She has now won 11-consecutive regular-season matches. Larsson made the overall score 6-0 with her win at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-2, to join Moser at 5-0 on the year.
Then Nguyen rounded out the shutout win with her 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles. Nguyen now has 51 career wins, which moves her into 11
th place on the Cougars' all-time list, surpassing Peggy Bell (class of 2007).
The Cougars are now 5-0 on the season after defeating the Royals and will next play on Wednesday on the road against Fresno Pacific.
